About the Wine
"Barolo is more than one of the world's great wines… it’s a landscape of rolling vineyards, cobblestone villages, and Alpine views." ~ Wine Spectator
Now imagine capturing all of that in a bottle.
Scrimaglio’s Barolo doesn’t just whisper tradition—it shouts it across centuries. The family’s journey began in the 1600s when they fled France for Piedmont. In 1920, Pietro Scrimaglio founded what would become one of Italy’s best-kept secrets in winemaking. His mission? Precision. Character. Clarity. Today, that legacy lives on, bottle after bottle.
Their wines walk the line perfectly—classic structure with just enough modern flair to keep things exciting. Scrimaglio helped resurrect Barbera d’Asti in the ‘80s. Now, their “Nizza” wines are DOCG-level iconic.
And here's where the story really takes off…
A few months ago, we touched down in Piedmont on a mission: to find an elite, top-notch Barolo. One that didn’t cost a fortune—or drink like a tannic monster needing 10 years to unwind. We wanted a Barolo with elegance and drinkability. Monday night-ready, but also cellar-worthy.
Enter: Vite Colte, one of the biggest cooperatives in Piedmont and a global standout. Originally called "Terre da Vino," it was revamped to "Vite Colte" in 2016 to make a splash in the wine world. With 180 skilled growers and 300 hectares of vineyards, it's a force in Barolo and beyond.
What sets them apart? Terrific terroir, savvy members, and cutting-edge science mean they produce top-quality wines. Their facility is a blend of tech and art, a must-see for wine and culture lovers. Vite Colte crafts Piedmontese classics like Barbera d'Asti, Barbera d'Alba, Nizza, Roero, Moscato d'Asti, Barolo, and Barbaresco, often named after Cesare Pavese's works. Scrimaglio is Vite Colte's boutique winery where they only pick the very best of the vineyards.
This 2020 Barolo is 100% Nebbiolo, aged longer than the law requires, and built for pure pleasure. The aromas leap out of the glass: spice box, licorice, dried roses, and roasted coffee. On the palate—velvety tannins, a plush plum core, and that signature Barolo lift. Elegant. Layered. Seductive.
Oh, and 2020? An outstanding vintage. Wine Spectator gave the year a 95-point review: “Barolos and Barbarescos are accessible, elegant, and charming.”
This isn’t just a great Barolo. This is the Barolo we’ll be sipping all fall, winter, summer and beyond.
Aging: Minimum 2 years in large oak barrels
Tasting Notes
100% Nebbiolo.
The wine's color journey from ruby red to deep garnet sets the stage, while the complex bouquet of spices, licorice, coffee, and dried roses creates an inviting aroma. The palate offers a balanced, full-bodied experience with smooth tannins, highlighted by flavors of plum and a subtle hint of jam. This wine strikes a perfect balance, combining elegance with depth, making every sip enjoyable and memorable.

Stemmy herbs, white pepper and savory berries on the nose. Fluid yet structured on the palate, with a medium to full body and a juicy finish. Already enjoyable. Drink now or hold. ~92 James Suckling
Rich and voluptuous nose reflecting vivid black cherry and sweet red fruit. The palate is sturdy with intense acidity. Full-bodied and majestic, with impressive depth of fruit. Spicy and perky finish, with good length. ~92 Decanter
