About The Wine

Fasoli Gino has been working Veneto since 1925 — and went fully organic in 1979, when the second-generation Gino Fasoli developed a chemical allergy and decided the vineyards had to change. By 1984, the estate had committed to organic principles across the board.

Today, they're the only biodynamic producer in the region, a century-old family operation that's spent the last forty years proving you don't need shortcuts to make honest wine.

This is their Sande Pinot Noir — a 2013 from the morainic hills near Lake Garda, where Veneto's cooler elevations and volcanic soils give Pinot the tension it needs to stay honest. The grapes are left to ferment in conical oak casks with manual punch-downs for 15 days, then aged to let the fruit settle and the tannins integrate. It's the kind of winemaking that takes patience and attention, not intervention.

Pinot Noir in Veneto isn't the default play — Corvina and Garganega own this region — but the cooler sites near the lake have the acidity and diurnal swing to pull it off. This is Pinot built for the table, not the tasting counter: red fruit that stays bright, structure that doesn't ask you to cellar it for a decade, and the kind of restraint that comes from a family that's been farming the same dirt for a century.

This is biodynamic, small-production Pinot Noir from a producer with nearly a hundred years of credibility, priced where most grocery-store Pinot starts. The 2013 vintage is drinking now, with the fruit still intact and the tannins fully resolved. Pull the cork tonight.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aromas and flavors of ripe red berries, colored with herbal notes, such as tarragon and dill. Full-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a plump, almost fat core of fruit. Maybe not what you would expect from pinot noir, but it’s hard to deny the easy appeal of this. Amazingly fresh and full of life for its age. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Enjoy now. ~93 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Fasoli Gino

Founded in 1925 in the heart of Soave, Veneto. Agricultural journey began in 1921 when Amadio Fasoli chose to focus on viticulture in the Illasi Valley, east of Verona. First sales invoice issued in 1925 to the parish priest. Second generation led by Gino Fasoli expanded vineyard area and wine production throughout Verona. Third generation transitioned to organic farming in 1979 due to Gino's allergy to chemicals. Since 1984, Fasoli Gino has upheld organic winemaking and viticulture principles.
