About The Wine

The Oremus vineyard was first mentioned in 1630 and stands today as one of the finest in Tokaj — the Hungarian appellation that Louis XIV crowned 'the wine of kings, the king of wines.' In 1993, the Alvarez family behind Vega Sicilia founded Tokaj-Oremus, bringing the precision and legacy of Spain's greatest estate to one of Europe's most storied vineyards.

Eszencia is the soul of Oremus — the rarest, most complex expression of noble-rot Tokaji, produced only in exceptional years when botrytised berries arrive in abundance. The 2014 vintage delivered those conditions. Each picker collects just 5 to 10 kilograms of hand-sorted berries per day. The grapes settle for 15 to 20 days under their own weight, yielding drops of nectar that ferment glacially in 50-liter glass containers, then age for years in traditional 68-liter atalag barrels. The result is a wine of 500-plus grams of residual sugar per liter, 2–3% alcohol, and a cellaring horizon measured in decades.

In the glass: toffee-brown depth. Aromas of creme brulee, dried apricot, lemongrass, and crushed stone. Enormously dense and honeyed in texture, with searing acidity cutting through brown sugar, walnut, pineapple, and caramel. The finish stretches long — coffee, cinnamon basil, oxidative richness held taut by vivid structure.

This is a trophy bottle with aging capacity that outlives the cellar it sits in. Ready now. Built for 50 years and beyond.

Furmint, Hárslevelű, Zéta and Sárga Muskotály — botrytised aszú berries, free-run juice only.

Deep amber, and genuinely viscous. It moves in the glass more like honey than wine.

The aromatics run to raw honey, beeswax, apricot and dried tropical fruit, with orange marmalade and quince underneath.

On the palate it is pure concentration — 479 grams of sugar per litre coating everything, then 14.9 grams of acidity cutting straight back through it. That tension is the whole point of Eszencia. The finish is enormous and goes on for minutes.

Serve at 8°C in very small pours. Cellaring potential of at least fifty years.
