About the Wine
The “King of Wines.” That’s Barolo. It’s one of Italy’s most lauded wines, made from 100% Nebbiolo, these wines are prized for their rich, full-body, balance, and seductiveness. The 2016 Cascina Adelaide Barolo Fossati hits all those marks. It has all the power and elegance expected from a Barolo.
It’s no surprise. Cascina Adelaide has been doing what it does for a long time. Adelaide began in 1817 as a group of winegrowers, and while the estate has changed hands a time or two since then, the soils and the vines have always thrived, ready for those who come next to care for them and produce great wines from them. The Drocco family is the most recent owner, purchasing Adelaide 20 years ago, modernizing the cellar, and doubling the vineyards.
Yet, the family embraces the tradition of the region, growing only indigenous grape varieties. In addition to Nebbiolo, their vineyards nourish Barbera, Dolcetto, and the ancient white grape Nascetta. This allows them to focus in the cellar, and that focus comes through in this wine made from grapes from a single vineyard chosen carefully by strict cluster selection, rushed to crush within a few hours of harvest to preserve the beauty of the fruit.
Aging: 24 months and spends an additional 6 months in bottle.
Tasting Notes: Aromas of ripe black fruits and the earthiness of mushrooms plus a beautiful floral quality with lilac and violet jumping out. Flavors of cherry, plum, white pepper, and earth. Great tannins and acidity. Simply an excellent Barolo.
Reviews
"Lovely purity of fruit with fresh, ripe strawberries and hints of hazelnuts, wet earth, and black mushrooms. Full-bodied, very layered, and rich with firm tannins that spread across the palate. A more opulent 2016. Try after 2022" ~95 James Suckling.
"With fruit from La Morra, the Cascina Adelaide 2016 Barolo Fossati offers a distinctive bouquet with a good many surprises along the way. This wine has a beautifully oral bouquet with rose, lilac, and violet. There are some sweet fruit tones of apricot and orange that go beyond the standard forest berry and cherry normally delivered by Nebbiolo. When you dig extra deep, you get unusual tones of thyme, green olive or dried rose potpourri that are not exactly typical of Nebbiolo, but they are quite pretty and interesting nonetheless. The tannins show good integration in this bottling, and I'm giving this wine a few extra points for offbeat originality. The jury is out on how those aromas will evolve because they are unusual. Some 15,000 bottles were made" ~ 93 Robert Parker.
