About The Wine

Fasoli Gino has been working Veneto since 1925 — and went fully organic in 1979, when the second-generation Gino Fasoli developed a chemical allergy and decided the vineyards had to change. By 1984, the estate had committed to organic principles across the board.

Today, they're the only biodynamic producer in the region, a century-old family operation that's spent the last forty years proving you don't need shortcuts to make honest wine.

Amarone della Valpolicella is the big gun of Veneto — Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella grapes dried for months before fermentation, concentrating sugar and flavor until the wine tastes like it weighs twice what the bottle says. It's the style that put the region on the fine-wine map, built for cellars and special occasions, and it almost always asks three figures. This one doesn't.

The grapes undergo appassimento — spread on trays in a cool environment for 50 to 60 days — then age a minimum of 36 months in barrique, pulling warmth and structure from the wood without losing the fruit. Hand-harvested in late September to early October, from the morainic hills around Lake Garda where the soils and elevation give the dried-grape style a lift it doesn't always get in warmer sites.

Deep ruby in the glass, opening on tobacco, coffee, and black pepper, with plum, jam, spices, and eucalyptus filling out the bouquet. The palate is warm and delicately tannic — vinous, clean, with a finish that's both sweet and firmly structured, trailing a spicy edge. Blackcurrant and plum carry the core, backed by the kind of tannin that makes you want food on the table.

This is what a century of knowledge and biodynamic farming taste like in an Amarone.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Subtle yet rich aromas of fruit-syrup with floral and mild-spice character. Then, the immediately expansive, dense, silky and fruity feel on the palate comes as a surprise. Firm tannins do little to rein it in. Chocolate at the end. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Delicious now, but aging will only improve this.
~94 James Suckling

Powerful, bright ruby with a slight garnet sheen. Intense nose with fine fresh fruit, of wild raspberry, some coriander seed and clove. A firework of spices on the palate, dark fruit and finally gripping, grippy tannins in many layers, long finish. ~94 Falstaff

Spicy, smoky, and earthy, with richly raisined fruits and sweet spices, with a lovely richness and good typicity. ~91 Decanter World Wide Awards
