    About The Wine

Louis Roederer is the house behind Cristal — the most iconic Champagne in the world.

But the Vintage Brut is where Roederer's estate winemaking philosophy really comes into focus. Founded in 1776 and still entirely family-owned, Roederer controls over 590 acres of prime Champagne vineyards, making it one of the very few grandes maisons that can honestly call itself an estate producer.

Vintage bottlings like this one are made only in exceptional years and represent the pinnacle of the house's terroir expression.

The 2016 Vintage Brut is built around Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Verzy — the original vineyard acquired by the Roederer family in 1841. This is "La Montagne" in a bottle: structured, concentrated, and more serious than most Champagnes at this price point. Think of it as what Cristal tastes like before it becomes Cristal. A third of the base wines were aged in French oak, giving depth and textural complexity rarely found in Brut Champagne. Aged four years on lees, then held a minimum six months post-disgorgement — this is a wine made with deliberate patience.

If your Champagne experience starts and ends with non-vintage bottles, this is the upgrade that will permanently raise the bar. It's drinking beautifully right now, and Wine.com projects it will age gracefully through 2040. Equal parts celebration wine and serious collector's Champagne.

68% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay. Golden straw with vivid highlights and an exceptionally fine, persistent mousse.

The nose opens with restrained strawberry, lemon zest, macerated flowers, and shortbread, with deeper notes of hazelnut, warm baguette, and candied citrus emerging with air. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly concentrated, with a pinprick mousse and long, chewy texture.

Flavors of crushed black raspberry, tangerine peel, Marcona almond, chalk, and a hint of blood orange zest move through with effortless drive and balance. The finish is long, mineral, and faintly saline. Drink now through 2040.

    CRITIC REVIEWS

    What the Critics Said

Complex nose of restrained strawberries and lemon zest, with macerated flowers and shortbread. Full body and plenty of concentration, with pinprick mousse, long and chewy, integrated acidity and amazing length. Pinot noir and chardonnay. Drink or hold. ~ 96 James Suckling

Produced from the first vineyard acquired by Roederer in 1841, this Champagne shows the beginnings of maturity as well as ripe, fresh apple fruit flavors. An aroma of toast mingled with kiwi fruits gives a finely balanced wine now ready to drink. ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

    ~ 95 The Wine Independent

A seamless Champagne, deftly knitting flavors of crushed black raspberry, tangerine peel, chalk and Marcona almond with the fine china–like acidity and satiny mousse. The graceful balance gives this an effortless feel, but there's intensity and drive to this well-tailored version. Long and fragrant on the finish, with hints of ground ginger, blood orange zest and mineral. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2040. 544 cases imported. ~ 94 Wine Spectator

The 2016 vintage of this Brut is an absolute cracker. Made with all three Champagne grapes, it's expressive, rich and textured, yet remarkably elegant. Layers of red apple skin, plum and apricot are balanced by baking spice, a hint of smoke and a cool mineral core. In the glass, it reveals increasing nuance over time. Fabulous. ~ 93 Decanter

    THE PRODUCER

    Louis Roederer

Louis Roederer, a family-owned Champagne house since 1776, has built its legacy on exceptional quality and meticulous vineyard management. Originally founded as Dubois Père & Fils, the company was renamed in 1833 after Louis Roederer inherited it. Over the years, Louis Roederer’s vision and commitment to excellence elevated the house to legendary status. Rather than relying on outside grape sources, Louis Roederer acquired some of the finest Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne, giving them complete control over the quality of their wines.

With over two centuries of winemaking experience, Louis Roederer continues to lead the Champagne world. The introduction of Cristal in 1876, originally crafted for Tsar Alexander II, marked a defining moment in Champagne history. Cristal became known as the ultimate expression of luxury, a cuvée that continues to be revered by collectors and connoisseurs around the globe. After the Russian Revolution, Cristal was released internationally in 1945, cementing its status as a world-class Champagne
