About the Wine
Monbousquet’s terroir is truly exceptional, with mostly warm, deep gravel to the south and sandy-clay soils to the north. As at Cheval Blanc and Figeac, its soils are largely gravel, and thus warm, so relatively late-ripening Cabernets can ripen perfectly. This natural feature accounts for a particularly large proportion of Cabernet grapes in the vineyard’s composition.
"What makes the 2016 vintage so special is the quality across the Bordeaux hierarchy. The same character found in the most complex wines is also apparent in the simpler options. They all offer bottlings with rich, ripe fruit and a tannic structure that promises longevity." ~Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast
Dating back to 1540 Chateau Monbousquet is no stranger to winemaking. In its long history there estate has always been highly regarded for the wine that is produced, known both for power and finesse. In a vintage like 2016 where nearly all producers were able to make good wine, Monbousquet is able to make great wine.
Aging: 18-24 months in new French Oak
Tasting Notes
: 60% merlot, 30% cabernet franc, 10% cabernet sauvignon. The nose exudes aromas of ripe blackcurrants, licorice, and wild herbs, leading on to an expansive palate displaying rich black and red fruits supported by silky smooth and almost seamless tannins.
Critical Reviews
"A soft and very silky Monbousquet with wonderfully caressing texture. Full body. Delicious crushed cherries and berries. Beautiful length, too. Hard not to drink now. Better after 2024." ~ 96 James Suckling
"Deep purple-black, the 2016 Monbousquet charges out of the gate with rambunctious plum preserves, Black Forest cake and mocha scents with hints of redcurrant jelly, hoisin and cardamom. Full-bodied with a very compelling minerally restraint on the palate, it has a great intensity of red and black fruits with plush tannins and a lively lift to the finish." ~ 93+ Robert Parkers Wine Advocate
