About the Wine
Pago Calzadilla is one of the top estates in all of Spain. They're one of 19 producers to achieve the exclusive title of 'Pago,' an accolade only awarded to producers who have to exemplify quality for a decade. These estate-grown, organic grapes come from vineyards up to 40 years old vines and produce one of Spain's most vibrant and concentrated wines. It's time to discover the magic of Spanish wine from one of the top estates in the country.
What separates a Pago from the rest of the producers within a specific region? Quality. There are strict guidelines for being allowed to use the term Pago within a wine label. All grapes must be grown by the estate, and yields must typically be reduced. There is even a requirement for time spent making wine, with at least a decade of production under the estates' belt. Because of these reasons, there have only been 19 estates to achieve Pago status since 2003.
Pago Calzadilla is located in the Río Mayor Valley, at an altitude of 3,280 feet. The valley’s microclimate, with frequent fogs and winds, protects the vineyard from dangerous spring frosts and brings freshness to summer nights. Pago Calzadilla takes their wine-growing extremely seriously. All of the grapes are grown organically on their estate. They produce their own compost to keep their soils fertile. The winery is all gravity fed, with the barrel room sitting at the bottom, where they age their wines for a minimum of 12 months in French and American Oak.
This label presents the soil from which it comes, layers of limestone that alternate with clay, and in between, lapis specularis, or what is the same, crystallized plaster, typical of Alcarria. It is a very versatile wine, easy to drink for any occasion.
Aging: 12 months in 500 L and 225 L barrels of new French & American oak
