There is only so much you can expect from a wine, a rockstar founding team, a mindfully made product, and maybe on top of all that some good critical reviews. AXR has all of these, the estate is cut from the same cloth as Alpha Omega, just placed three miles up Highway 29. Winemaker Jean Hoefliger is constantly challenging himself to produce a better product, and critics notice. It's not often you see well-rated Chardonnay from Napa, but when you do, there is always a good reason. This wine is bright and energetic, teeming with beautiful fruit and richness, that is begging to be opened up and enjoyed.
AXR takes its name from the AxR rootstock (Aramond x Rupestris) that was so prominent in building the modern California wine industry, AxR#1 eventually succumbed to Phylloxera and most of California wine country was left as a blank canvas. Vintners now had a chance to replant and to rethink the entire structure of the vineyards; attention was paid to the terroir and unique varietals were researched. This was truly a turning point in the wine industry as we know it.
The AXR dream began with four friends sitting around a table sharing, dreaming, laughing, and occasionally sipping! The room was filled with an intense passion for wine and a good intention to be true to themselves and the history of Napa Valley: this is where AXR was born. By utilizing modern and innovative techniques in the cellar, AXR is able to extract the unique soul of Napa Valley's soils into wines enjoyable now, or many years to come.
Tasting Notes: 100% Chardonnay. Beautiful, shiny grey gold with a hint of pineapple. On the nose, an explosion of caramel, butterscotch, apricot, pineapple, crème brûlée, white chocolate, canned peaches. The palate is beautiful, dense with evolving acidity. Touches of grapefruit rind, Meyer lemon, and lingering notes of toffee.
Extremely beautiful chardonnay with peach pie, light toasted oak, and caramel. Full body, creamy texture, and a flavorful finish. Contrastive and beautiful. Drink now ~94 James Suckling
The 2017 Chardonnay gives up notes of warm apricots, green mango, and fresh pears plus suggestions of marzipan, acacia honey, and orange blossoms. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has impressive harmony and depth, with a silken texture and oodles of stone fruit and savory layers, finishing long and creamy. ~92 Robert Parker
The 2017 Chardonnay is also terrific, with a great nose of caramelized citrus and stone fruits interwoven with touches of spicy oak and white flowers. Medium-bodied, balanced, and with good acidity, it’s a classy Chardonnay I’d be happy to drink any time over the coming 3-5 years. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck
