The Golden Slope Chardonnay is almost an Hommage to Meursault. The style of this wine is somewhere in between what you would expect from a white Burgundy and the weighty whites of California. This is an impeccably balanced Chardonnay that is begging to be drank this winter, that being said if you are in the market for a cellar-worthy California Chard, this is your bottle.
Liquid Farm is a California winery that makes wine in a very old-world style. The idea that the place makes the wine is deeply observed here, with very minimal intervention in the cellar. Instead, the winemaking team takes the approach of letting the fermentation run its natural course and only adding minimal amounts of guidance when absolutely needed. This can be seen in the very minimal use of oak in this determinedly oaked style of chardonnay.
Proprietor Jeff Nelson has been in the wine business for the past 20+ years, working for some of the top Champagne and Burgundy houses. With the name Liquid Farm on Jeff’s mind for many years, it was the catalyst for starting the project in 2009 with the helping guidance of Brandon Sparks-Gillis of Dragonette Cellars.
Aging: 15 Months in 15% New French Oak Barrels
Tasting Notes: 100% Chardonnay. This wine dazzles with a light bright yellow color in the glass. On the nose, there is plenty of ripe orchard fruit and just a touch of citrus zest. The mouthfeel of this wine is extremely generous the bright acidity gives it a much-needed backbone structuring the wine perfectly.
Aged 15 months in 15% new French oak, the 2018 Chardonnay Golden Slope ratchets up the richness and boasts a medium gold hue, awesome notes of caramelized orchard fruits, spicy wood, toasted bread, and almond paste. Playing in the medium to full-bodied side of the spectrum, it has juicy acidity, terrific purity, and a great finish. It's impressive today and will be impressive in 8-10 years as well. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2017 Chardonnay Golden Slope shows a slightly richer side of the Sta. Rita Hills. Tangerine peel, lemon confit, almonds, a touch of new oak and tropical inflections all meld together in a wonderfully pliant, sensual Chardonnay endowed with tons of appeal. Extroverted and racy, the Golden Slope will drink well right out of the gate. ~93 Antonio Galloni
