About the Wine

The story of Antonopoulos Vineyards begins with a visionary—Konstantinos Antonopoulos—who, in the Christmas of 1983, embarked on a journey to cultivate a vineyard in Vasiliko, Achaia. His choice of location, characterized by its high altitude, northerly orientation, and clay-rich soil, laid the foundation for a vineyard that thrives on natural protection from the elements and abundant underground water.

Nestled between the peaks of Panachaiko, Chelmos, and Erymanthos, Antonopoulos Vineyards enjoys a unique microclimate. Cool nights and mild days create an extended grape maturation period, while the rugged topography ensures excellent water drainage. This combination results in low yields—less than 1kg of grapes per vine—leading to intensely concentrated flavors.

Antonopoulos Vineyards comprises two primary vineyard blocks: Michaleika and Amygdalia. Michaleika, situated at 750 meters elevation, features sandy and clay soils ideal for Chardonnay, Moschofilero, Athiri, and Lagorthi. Amygdalia, at 900 meters elevation, boasts clay and limestone soils perfect for cool-climate Syrah and white varieties like Riesling, Muscat, and the indigenous Robola.

The 2018 Malagouzia is a testament to the vineyard's dedication to high-altitude viticulture and indigenous grape varieties. With its north-eastern exposure and meticulously trellised vines, this wine achieves perfect maturity with elevated acidity and elegance. It embodies the belief that sustainable practices and a deep respect for the land can yield wines of exceptional quality.

Aging: Skin contact for 40% of the grapes, fermentation in stainless steel tank, minimal lees contact and bottled early to retain the delicate aromatics.

Tasting Notes

100% Malagouzia. This wine has a pale yellow colour with a hint of green and aromas of apple, pear, and white peach on a honey background that will increase in intensity over time. A medium-bodied wine, aromatic and harmoniously balanced, with a pleasant aftertaste.
