About The Wine

Founded in 1731 in Beaune, Bouchard Pere & Fils stands among Burgundy's oldest and most prestigious houses — a producer whose nearly three centuries of continuity are matched only by the quality of its vineyard holdings. The estate owns over 130 hectares across the region, including 12 hectares of Grand Cru and 74 hectares of Premier Cru, and has held a monopoly on the legendary Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus vineyard since 1791. That kind of staying power doesn't happen by accident.

Les Cailles is a Premier Cru vineyard in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the kind of mid-slope parcel that defines what Cote de Nuits Pinot Noir delivers when precision and restraint meet serious terroir. Nuits-Saint-Georges sits at the heart of Burgundy's red wine tradition — limestone soils that pull minerality from the bedrock, structured wines that marry power with elegance, and a reputation for age-worthiness that collectors prize.

The 2018 vintage was unanimously greeted with satisfaction across Burgundy. The exceptional weather, especially during the harvest period, delivered grapes in perfect health. Harvesting was possible for almost an entire month, and the first tastings before the Hospices de Beaune wine auction signaled that 2018 would be a truly great year.

The wine delivers ripe black cherry and raspberry laced with candied orange peel, oak, and spice. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied and fleshy, supported by fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, saline finish. James Suckling scored it 94 points, calling out the floral character, polished texture, and seamless chocolate-coated red fruit. This is Burgundy from a house that's been perfecting its craft since before the American Revolution — built to reward both early drinking and patient cellaring.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is attractive with floral character and notes of fresh cherries and blueberries. Some dried herbs, too. Medium-bodied. So polished, silky and seamless with chocolate-coated red fruit and a delicate finish. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling
