About The Wine

Saint-Emilion sits on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, where clay and limestone soils favor Merlot and Cabernet Franc over the Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates across the river. The terroir here produces wines with a softer, more aromatic profile — red fruit, spice, and silky tannins instead of the austere structure of the Left Bank.

The 2018 vintage delivered a rainy first half that tapered off sooner than the Left Bank, giving way to dry conditions in the second half. The late-ripening Cabernet Franc — the key player in this blend — thrived in the extended season, developing concentration without losing freshness. The result is a wine that balances power and elegance, with garnet color in the glass and subtle aromas of black fruit.

In the glass, you get roasted red fruit, pit fruits, licorice, and cocoa — a forward, medium-bodied wine with fresh acidity and silky tannins. Jeff Leve of The Wine Cellar Insider called it "a forward, medium-bodied, fresh, easy to like charmer," This is Right Bank Bordeaux at a price that punches well above its weight — the kind of bottle that drinks like something twice the cost.

Pour it tonight with grilled lamb or aged cheeses, or cellar it for a few years to let the fruit deepen and the tannins soften. Either way, you're drinking real Bordeaux from a classic appellation for the price of a grocery-store Cabernet.

THE PRODUCER

Chateau Redon

Château Redon is a small Right Bank estate located in the valley south of the Saint-Émilion appellation proper, in the commune of Vignonet, taking its name from the family that owns it. The vineyard covers just 6.67 hectares, planted to the classic Saint-Émilion trio of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Winemaking follows traditional Right Bank practice — temperature-controlled stainless steel or concrete vats, a pre-fermentation maceration, 20 to 30 days of total maceration, and malolactic fermentation in vat — producing wines described as intense, lively, and expressive. One reviewer called it one of the "sleepers" in its category, a lesser-known estate that overdelivers relative to its site, with obvious red fruit that's pure and concentrated, elegant and refined with typical Saint-Émilion character.
