About The Wine

Domaine Carneros isn't another California sparkling house — it's what happens when Champagne Taittinger stakes 138 acres in Carneros and builds its American dream. Founded in 1987 by Claude Taittinger, the estate was created to prove California could produce finesse-driven, terroir-expressive sparkling wine worthy of the Taittinger name. Founding winemaker Eileen Crane spent 33 years refining that vision before passing the torch to Remi Cohen in 2020.

Le Reve — French for "the dream" — is the tete de cuvee, the house's finest bottling and Claude Taittinger's original ambition: America's finest blanc de blancs. Crafted from the most prized blocks of 100% estate-grown Chardonnay, it's aged a minimum of seven years en tirage using exacting methode traditionnelle. The result has been called America's best sparkling wine, repeatedly.

The 2018 opens with gardenia and white flowers, Meyer lemon and quince, then unfolds into honeysuckle, creme brulee, and a hint of pineapple with toasty, lightly smoky edges. The palate is powerful yet silky — full mouthfeel, serious tension, a long round finish. 96 points from James Suckling. Given just 0.8% dosage, the wine is built to age: delicious now, but crafted to evolve for decades in the cellar.

This is Carneros Chardonnay at its most refined — cool-climate fruit, Champagne discipline, and the kind of depth that makes grocery-store bubbles taste emotionally vacant. Pull the cork tonight or cellar it through 2040. Either way, you're drinking the dream.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

One of California’s finest sparkling releases each year, balancing power with mineral tension and finely tuned acidity that takes time in bottle to soften. Aromas of sliced lemon, talc powder, white flowers, salted nuts and a slight umami aftertaste which is delightful. The palate is mid-weighted with a salivating acidity that cuts through the texture and power of the fruit with a finely beaded mousse. Seven years on tirage, disgorged late 2025, made from 100% chardonnay with 8 g/L dosage, this is excellence. Drink or hold. ~ 97 James Suckling

A totally dazzling wine, the 2018 ‘Le Reve’ is all Chardonnay coming from their Carneros estate vineyard. Given .8% dosage, this opens with gardenia flower alongside citrus rind and shades of cardamom dusted pastry crust on the nose. The palate is loaded with power and tension with a silky mousse. Dense and delicious, enjoy this stunning sparkling wine now and over the next fifteen years to come. Drink 2026-2041. ~96 Owen Bargreen

Fresh flowers, lemon peel, green apple, and pastry aromas jump from the glass on the nose of this Blanc de Blancs. The palate is intensely focused, with bright acidity, plush texture, and flavors of tart pineapple, crisp apple, citrus blossoms, and candied ginger thrumming along the finish. Best from 2028-2040. ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Carneros

The CEO is Remi Cohen. The winemakers are Zak Miller and TJ Evans. Domaine Carneros is Taittinger's winery in California. The winery was opened by the Champagne house as a result of the potential for quality sparkling wine in California. California sparkling wines are made with mostly the same grapes and production techniques as Champagne. Premium California sparkling wines strive for finesse and elegance rather than imitating Champagne. Domaine Carneros was established in 1987 when Claude Taittinger selected a 138-acre parcel. Domaine Carneros was founded in 1987 by Claude Taittinger, a member of the noble family behind Champagne Taittinger. Eileen Crane was selected as Founding Winemaker to oversee the development of the Taittinger style in Carneros.
