About The Wine

Roberto Bianco has run Cascina Morassino since 1984, farming 3.5 hectares at the foot of Ovello — one of the first vineyards to ever make Barbaresco and the northernmost cru in the town. It's a one-person operation, and Roberto runs out of wine every year before the next vintage is bottled. That's the kind of cult micro-estate people hunt for.

This Langhe Merlot is the rare Piedmont red that actually tastes like Merlot — not just another regional catchall. Roberto works calcareous clay soils in the middle of the hill, and the wine shows it: full-bodied and structured, with red berries, pomegranate, sour cherry, star anise, and a hazelnut thread that runs from the palate through the finish. Firm tannins, racy acidity, the kind of backbone that rewards patience.

Merlot in Piedmont can be a throwaway grape, planted for yield and blended away. Not here. Roberto's version is intense, built for the cellar, and drinks above its weight class.

Delicious now if you give it an hour in the decanter. Better in three years.

Deep garnet with ruby reflections. Aromas of ripe cherries, strawberries, roses, and subtle earthy undertones with hints of spices and dried herbs.

Full-bodied and structured palate with flavors of red berries, pomegranate, and sour cherry, intertwined with star anise and a touch of hazelnut.

Firm tannins and racy acidity provide a solid backbone. Long and persistent finish, closing on a hazelnut note, with lingering impressions of red fruit and spice.
