About The Wine

"Ferrand" comes from the old French word for iron. That's not a coincidence.

The vineyard sits on Pomerol's crasse de fer. It's an iron-flecked clay and sand soil that runs under some of the appellation's most famous names. Château Ferrand isn't one of those names. It's the family next door, on the same south-facing slopes near Nénin and La Commanderie.

Fernand Gasparoux bought 3.5 hectares here in 1934, after years working the négociant trade in Libourne. He built it up himself, parcel by parcel, to the 12 hectares his family farms today. Three generations later, the Gasparoux family still runs the estate. Since 2019 — this vintage — Château Ferrand has carried HVE3 environmental certification. One more sign the family still does this the hard way, not the corporate way.

Pomerol is one of the most expensive wine appellations on earth. Within this same 800-hectare stretch, Petrus sells for thousands a bottle. Ferrand isn't playing that game. It's the same appellation, the same soil signature. Made by a family that's owned these 12 hectares since before World War II. That's the real reason to buy Pomerol from a producer like this one. Not because it's exclusive. Because it's honest.
