About The Wine

Founded in 1998 by Terry and Mary Peabody, Craggy Range has built a legacy producing exceptional wines from New Zealand's most distinguished sites. The family established a 1,000-year trust to ensure the winery remains under family stewardship for generations — three generations work together today. Chief Winemaker Ben Tombs, named New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year in 2020, describes Te Muna Road Pinot Noir as having "elegance and tension."

The 2019 Te Muna Road Pinot Noir is drawn from 100% Pinot Noir grown on the higher terraces of the Te Muna Road Vineyard in Martinborough — Te Muna means "secret place." These select parcels are planted on ancient stony soils of the Martinborough terrace, a hidden gem of the wine world that delivers Pinot with rare precision and depth.

Grapes are hand-picked and fermented before aging 10 months in French oak barriques (28% new).

The wine shows bright red cherries and blueberries on the nose and palate, with an elegantly fresh, chalky feel. Medium-bodied, it tastes smooth, silky, and round in the mouth, with a floral bouquet, black cherry, wild spice, and earthy undertones. The finish is dry, soft, and very long.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Complex and focused nose displaying scents of black plums, wild strawberry and seductive mineral notes. Silky texture on the palate, with dense plummy fruit. ~ 96 Decanter World Wine Awards

This is not a timid wine. It's rich and round, wearing its brambly, medicinal, earthy, spicy and floral colors loud and proud. The silky mouthfeel is tugged into place by sappy tannins. There's intensity, balance and structure, and a real sense of place. Drink now–2029. ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

Plenty of spice and modern-leaning, reductive complexity here, as well as bright red cherries, blueberries, cassis and violets. The palate has a fleshy, supple and attractively fresh red-cherry and blueberry core. Mouth-filling, flavorful and vividly fresh at the finish. Drink over the next six years. Screw cap. ~93 James Suckling
