About the Wine
Established in 1999, De Toren Private Cellar quickly rose to global acclaim as one of South Africa’s most visionary wineries. Located on a wind-swept hilltop in Stellenbosch, the estate is home to the country’s first gravity-fed cellar and is currently led by cellarmaster Charles Williams, whose precision and artistry drive every vintage.
Designed from the ground up to produce world-class Bordeaux-style wines, the estate meticulously matches 25 Bordeaux clones to 10 rootstocks across 15 soil types, drawing complexity from its ancient granite terroir, some 540 million years old.
With a strong focus on organic farming, low yields, and gentle, minimal-intervention winemaking, De Toren creates bold yet elegant blends.
The 2019 De Toren Fusion V takes its name from the seamless fusion of Bordeaux’s five classic varietals—Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. First released in 1999, it marked the debut of De Toren Private Cellar and set a new benchmark for South African red blends.
Grown in gravel-rich soils with long afternoon sun exposure, the vineyards naturally favor Cabernet Sauvignon. This varietal makes up 50–60% of the final blend, giving the wine its deep color, bold structure, and age-worthy character.
Tasting Notes
Blend: 56.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.4% Malbec, 9.6% Cabernet Franc, 14.4% Merlot, 4.7% Petit Verdot
Crafted from Bordeaux’s noble varietals, the 2019 De Toren Fusion V delivers deep layers of dark berries, licorice, black cherry, and a hint of cedar. Smooth as silk and beautifully balanced, it finishes with a touch of lingering fruit. A cellar-worthy wine that shines today and evolves with age.
Critic Reviews
~ 95 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine.
This robust red marries an old-school profile of ripe currant, cured tobacco, and toasty smoke flavors with modern flair, offering firm tannins that are deftly knit, plus flashes of melted licorice, candied violet, iron and milled white pepper. Long and supple on the fragrant, herb-laced finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2033. 654 cases imported. ~ 93 Wine Spectator
~ 92 Cellar Tracker
Sporting a new label, the 2019 Fusion V is bold and expressive with a rich and round mouthfeel. Medium to full-bodied, the tannic structure has a refined, gripping sensation that will remain food-friendly. It ends with a long, spicy finish and elements of bitter dark chocolate. Give it one more year in the bottle, and enjoy it over the next 12 to 13 years. ~ 91 Robert's Parker, Wine Advocate
This wine needs a few minutes to open up. Once it does, earthy berries, hints of plums, and light chocolate notes are revealed on the nose. Black fruit and hints of olive mingle on the smooth palate. There are notes of dark chocolate and mint in the finish. Supple tannins and moderate acidity are enough to provide a good structure. ~ 91 Wine Enthusiast
