About The Wine

Giorgio Primo is a statement—one of the most commanding, polished, and cellar-worthy reds coming out of Italy today. Crafted by visionary winemaker Giampaolo Motta, it’s his ultimate tribute to legacy and lineage, named for both his grandfather and first son. And it shows. This is the wine where everything—soil, altitude, barrel, and obsession—comes together.

In 2019, Cabernet Sauvignon runs the show — 55% of a Bordeaux blend grown nowhere near Bordeaux. Giorgio Primo is Giampaolo Motta's flagship, named for his grandfather and his first son. Motta walked away from a Naples leather business to chase Tuscan terroir, and this is the wine he made to prove the point.

Born in the limestone-streaked hills of Panzano in Chianti, at one of Tuscany’s highest and most dynamic estates, Giorgio Primo is the apex of what Super Tuscan wines can be. Collectors, take note—this is your showpiece. Drinkers, prepare to be floored. This isn’t just the best wine from La Massa. It’s one of the best from Italy. Period.

Made from 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Giorgio Primo is medium-to-deep garnet-purple. Cassis, crushed blackberry, and dark plum lead, threaded with graphite, pencil shavings, violets, cedar, tobacco, and warm spice. Full-bodied and dense, with firm, polished tannins and a savory, mineral-edged freshness that carries a long finish. Built to age, but already generous.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Bright, royal ruby red. Compact nose, with intense aromas of cherries, truffles, black pepper, then rich notes of berries, gorgeous blackberries and cassis. Densely woven on the palate, with beautiful texture and punchy tannins, multi-layered, with mineral and stone notes, radiant and powerful, lingering and long, fabulous. ~99 Falstaff

Extremely complex aromas of crushed currants, spices and sandalwood with some bark. Violets, too! Full-bodied with creamy, polished tannins and great intensity. Layered and beautiful. Better in 2024, but already beautiful to try. ~97 James Suckling

Taking things up a notch, the 2019 Giorgio Primo is savory and brooding on the nose. Pouring a deep red/purple hue, it reveals notes of boysenberry, pencil shavings, blackcurrants, pine sap, and sage. Full-bodied, it saturates the palate with sweet tannins, a rounded mid-palate, and a great finish. It’s a cellar-worthy wine that’s only going to improve and will harmonize nicely for another few years if stored well. Drink 2026-2046. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

‘[Winemaking consultant] Stéphane Derenoncourt told me he'd never seen Cabernet ripen like it does here!’ La Massa's Giampaolo Motta told me enthusiastically. The estate’s flagship wine is a Bordeaux blend from vineyards in the Conca d'Oro in Panzano, unique for being the only area to have a mix of all of Chianti Classico’s three main soil types. Herbal, plummy and earthy, this 2019 is rich in chocolate, spice and black fruits. Concentrated and silky, its glossy dark fruit is lifted by a streak of sapid red fruits, a balsamic fresh element and mouthwatering acidity. Keep for a few years before opening. ~96 Decanter

The 2019 Giorgio Primo is a worth follow up to the stellar 2018. Dense, rich and explosive, the 2019 races across the palate with dark fruit, chocolate, leather, incense and spice. This sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon-based Panzano red has a ton to offer. The oak is a bit prominent; otherwise, the 2019 is nicely done. ~96 Vinous Media
