About The Wine

Hall Wines sits among Napa Valley's most recognizable names — not because of marketing budget, but because Kathryn Hall built it with the kind of rigor you'd expect from someone who holds degrees from Berkeley and Columbia and returned to winemaking in 2001 with something to prove.

The estate farms some of the valley's most coveted blocks, and this bottling pulls from across the appellation — a snapshot of what Napa Cabernet does when the vintage cooperates and the winemaking stays out of the way.

The 2019 growing season was near-perfect for Cabernet in Napa Valley. Bud break arrived late March, followed by a dry spring and a long, warm summer that let the fruit ripen slowly and evenly. Harvest ran from mid-September through late October — Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot came in at full physiological ripeness, with structure and flavor in balance. The kind of vintage winemakers dream about and talk about years later.

The fruit was hand-picked in early morning, destemmed, and sent to tank for whole-berry fermentation. Four to seven days of cold-soaking at 45°F pulled color, aroma, and flavor before fermentation began at 82°F. Twice-daily pump-overs kept the cap wet and the extraction even. The wine spent twenty months in half new French oak, half neutral, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered — nothing between the vineyard and the glass.

In the glass: showy, succulent ripeness with crushed plum and a light cedar edge. Fresh blueberries, blackberry pie, huckleberry jam, and a touch of graphite on the nose.

The palate is smooth and velvety — blackberry coulis, dried black cherries, blueberry compote, dark chocolate, toasted walnuts, croissants, and a whisper of vanillin. Big finish that lingers.

Pull the cork tonight or cellar it through the decade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This packs in some serious plum compote and cassis flavors, liberally wrapped in dark licorice and finishing with a swath of sweet toast and tobacco on the broad finish. Nice mineral underpinning keeps it honest. Fairly accessible despite its heft. Drink now through 2034. 55,000 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator (v.2018)
