About the Wine

"We believe it to be a sleeping beauty of a property" were the words proclaimed by Prince Robert of Luxembourg, the President of Haut-Brion, when they purchased the property in 2011. He was right. Under this new guidance, the Chateau has become a sleeping giant (too often being overlooked), that delivers well above its modest price tag!

Le Dragon de Quintus is the estate's Second wine. The name comes from the dragon statue that stands tall above the enchanting land of Saint-Emilion, situated on a high promontory where the estate is found. This is a blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, where the first word that comes to mind here is: harmonious. The wine is attractive, very round, smooth and fresh, with red fruit, redcurrant, and blueberry overtones. It will be ready to drink fairly young and should provide a great deal of pleasure.

Le Dragon de Quintus treads softly in the saturated market that surrounds the Bordeaux wine world, only rewarding those in the know. At the time of the purchase, Prince Robert declared, "Our family company looks forward to returning this great estate to its former glory." It didn't take them long and once this wine blesses your palate, you won't be able to resist!

Aging: 6-8 months in new French oak barrels, 33.5% new.

Tasting Notes: 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc. Beautiful dark red colour. Intense, fruity, and refreshing, complex nose revealing discreet hints of oak alongside very ripe black fruit aromas. Starts out fine and elegant on the palate, becoming full-bodied with relatively long and concentrated tannins, accompanied by fruity notes. This Dragon is definitely well-balanced and delicious.

Reviews

Beautiful aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants with licorice and tile, following through to a medium to full body with fine tannins and a delicious, creamy finish. So attractive. Second wine. Best after 2025. ~94 James Suckling

Bramble berries on the nose, quite rich. Lovely texture, bright, bold, and charismatic - great charm, this shines bright in the glass and on the palate, lovely and round full of rich flavors with enough body and structure to give a good mouthfeel without being too heavy right now. The right side of elegant with a lovely purity of cherry and strawberry flavours. This has some bites and chews too. Good plushness but still with a purity of flavor. Not massively complex but delivers a good punchy wine. Confident. 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc. ~93 Decanter

The nose is elegant, gourmandize, and offers a little concentration, a fine freshness as well as a certain tension. It reveals notes of pulpy/creamy blackberry, pulpy strawberry, and more slightly cornflowers associated with touches of strawberry flowers, and creamy red berries as well as fine hints of blond tobacco and an imperceptible hint of pepper. The palate is fruity, elegant, “framed” and offers freshness, minerality, nice definition, energy as well as a little creaminess. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of luscious/juicy raspberry, luscious/juicy cherry, and more lightly of bright Boysenberry associated with small touches of juicy/tangy blue plum as well as hints of toasty, chocolate, toasted almond, and a subtle hint of nutmeg. ~91-92 VertdeVin

This fresh and pure version has refined edges, thanks to subtle chalky minerality, with a gentle core of damson plum and dark cherry fruit that glides through easily. Features an incense hint that swirls on the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2029. ~90 Wine Spectator

The 2019 Dragon de Quintus has turned out nicely, delivering a generous bouquet of rich, plumy fruit and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, ample, and fleshy, it's seamless and polished, with its sweet core of fruit framed by ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with an expansive finish. As usual, this bottling tends to derive from lower-lying parcels on deeper, sandier soils than those that inform the grand vin. ~90 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Touch of leather, sweeter and sunnier than 2021 but perhaps less precision. The rounded and generous palate, blending red and dark fruit, youthful tannin, more bite than 2021, yet well made in a rich a bit robust style. ~90 Andreas Larsson
