About the Wine

The story of Domaine Peres de L’Eglise dates back to 1805, when Benoît Jouffron, coming from a well-known CDP family, founded what was called Les Terres Saintes. It was many years later, in 1992, that the name was changed to Domaine des Pères de l’Église.

Today, this winery is managed by the 7th generation of the family. Serge y Laetitia are the proud owners and winemakers. They have grown the vineyards and achieved enormous changes to both the vineyard and cellar. Their care for the land led them to achieve an HVE sustainable certification in 2020.

This century-old Château has vineyards in some of the most outstanding appellations in Rhone. Le Calice de Saint Pierre is a beautiful blend, with grapes coming from four different terroirs of Chateauneuf du Pape. The result is impressive, delivering power, elegance, and depth.

This wine is for all savvy wine drinkers who are looking for an outstanding CDP. This wine is ready to drink today, but it will reward the patient who decides to wait.

Aging: 12 months in foudres (50%), barrels (30%) and concrete tank (20%).

Tasting Notes

85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah. Deep garnet color with purple reflections. On the nose, complex aromas of stewed red fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry, crushed strawberry, etc.), prune jam, and notes of almonds. An expression of garrigue on the palate with a mineral finish and smoky notes. A perfect wine to age for 10+ years!

Critical Reviews

Whiffs of rose petals and fresh raspberries are subtle yet thrilling in this wine. A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 5% Syrah, it is full-bodied but bright in composition, balanced by lip-smacking blackberry and crisp plum flavors. The long, supple finish is framed by ripe, cocoa-powder tannins. Delicious already, the wine should gain complexity through 2040 and hold further. ~95 Wine Enthusiast.

Medium towards deep garnet red color. Fragrant and floral aromas of lavender, garrigue, raspberry, plum and crème de cassis. Elegant, yet powerful palate, a rather Burgundian texture with supple tannin, good layers of finely spicy red fruit, digest and persistent finish. Should improve nicely but drinks truly well already. ~94 Andreas Larsson.

The nose is racy and offers a fine power, a good definition as well as a juicy/fresh beautiful fruit. This wine should be decanted. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy lemon, juicy/fresh mandarine, small notes of apple flowers associated with small touches of fresh apricot, tilleul, apple flowers, a racy minerality as well as a very discreet hint of lime, and an imperceptible hint of spices. The palate is fruity, and well-balanced and offers a juicy/acidulous frame, good definition, precision, gourmandize as well as suavity, a good purity of the fruit, a small fat, a fine unctuosity, a fine tension and a good finesse of the grain. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy/juicy apple, juicy nectarine, small notes of juicy pink lychee associated with small touches of apple flowers, lemon flowers, Guenette, acacia as well as very fine hints of bee wax, and toasted. Good length. A very discreet tannic hint, sapidity, a beautiful touch as well as a very discreet hint of dry almond on the finish/persistence. A beautiful gourmand wine on the fruit. ~93 VertdeVin.

A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape le Calice de Saint Pierre features scents of red raspberries and cherries on the nose. Aged in a combination of foudre, tank, and older barrels, it's medium to full-bodied, somewhere between silky and velvety in texture, soft, relatively easy-drinking, and harmonious. ~90 Robert Parker.
