About the Wine

Planeta is one of the most iconic, and well known producers in Sicily. Fun fact? The winery was even featured in the critically acclaimed TV Show The White Lotus.

Alessio Planeta, head of Planeta, has been named "Winemaker of the Year" worldwide by the prestigious Wine Enthusiast magazine through their "Wine Star Awards" in 2023. 

The family history of this Sicilian Estate goes back for more than 5 centuries, where in such a closed and traditional culture, the Planeta family is not afraid to innovate and modernize. Diego Planeta along with other top-notch wine consultants from Italy like Giacomo Tachis, Carlo Corino, Giampaolo Fabris, and Attilio Scienza, have managed to position Planeta as the reference point in Sicilian and Italian winemaking. Their vineyards are distributed throughout 5 different regions around Sicily: Menfi, Etna, Vittoria, Noto, and Capo Milazzo, resulting in an incredibly interesting wine portfolio: Different soils, different climates, different grapes, different (and incredible) wines! La Segreta, named after the woods surrounding the Ulmo vineyards, has always been crafted exclusively from the Planeta family’s estate vineyards, cultivated sustainably and organically. 

Tasting Notes

50% Nero d’Avola, 25% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Franc. Intense and vivid ruby red colour. On the nose aromas of currants and mulberries with a final spicy and minty note. In the mouth the wine demonstrates its fine personality with flavours of ripe wild fruit, balanced by a full and grassy taste in a very pleasant way. The tannins are soft and well smoothed thus conferring a very versatile character to this wine.

Then comes the warmhearted palate with a satisfying harmony of generous body, ripe fruit and a base of well-crafted tannins, Interesting iodine note at the finish. Sparkling ruby ​​red with a brightening edge. Fine roasted aromas hit the nose, fresh cedar, small red berries, cranberries, a hint of rosemary. Lively on the palate, shows fine embedded tannins interplaying with the acidity, stimulating, juicy, narrows at the back, has a decidedly fruity aftertaste. ~91 Falstaff
