About The Wine

Tenuta di Nozzole has been on the map since 1300, when it belonged to the Florentine Strozzi family. In 1971 the Folonari family — wine producers for over two centuries — bought the estate and turned it into one of Chianti Classico's most reliable sources of terroir-driven Sangiovese. Today the farm spans 385 hectares in Greve in Chianti, with 90 devoted to vineyards and 15 to olive groves.

La Forra is the estate's single-vineyard statement — the kind of Chianti Classico Riserva that separates a Tuesday bottle from a cellar candidate. Minimum two years of aging, hand-selected fruit, the patience that lets Sangiovese show what it can do. The 2019 spent 24 months in oak, combining traditional structure with modern finesse. James Suckling scored it 94 points.

The vintage gave the estate everything it needed. Normal winter with hard frosts, average spring rainfall, a hot summer without drought stress. Harvest started in the last ten days of September. The result: Sangiovese with optimum sapidity and tannin, good alcohol, excellent acidity.

In the glass, you get ripe cherry and violet on the nose, with cedar and subtle spice underneath. The palate is medium to full-bodied — red plum, tobacco, dried herbs — held together by refined tannins and the kind of bright acidity that makes Sangiovese age gracefully. Long, layered, and spicy on the finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The nose starts in your grandmother's living room, with perfumed aromas of flowers, baking spices, vanilla and candied cherries, before vegetal notes of bell pepper and herbs waft in from her garden. On the palate, these savory notes slowly crescendo into a vibrant, spicy, acidic finish.~ 94 Wine Enthusiast

Notes of dried cherries and red plums with hints of cured meat, walnuts, a little bit of leather and moist earth. Full-bodied and structured with fine, polished tannins. Wide and generous and very refined. Complete and focused wine with a broad and lingering finish. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Intense ruby red with subtle purple shimmer. Fragrant, intriguing nose, ethereal hints, reminiscent of eucalyptus, some violets and cherry in the background. On the palate there are notes of blueberries and marzipan, nice interplay of acidity and tannin, spicy finish.~ 92 Falstaff

A brawny red, with balsamic notes of tomato leaf, eucalyptus and juniper matching cherry, earth, vanilla and oak spice flavors. The core of fruit is buried today, yet this finds nice equilibrium in the end. Best from 2025 through 2040. 6,500 cases made, 280 cases imported. ~ 90 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Tenuta di Nozzole

Tenuta di Nozzole is a historic Tuscan estate in the hills of Greve in Chianti, with roots dating back to the 1300s and a modern chapter that began when the Folonari family acquired it in 1971. Across its 385 hectares, Sangiovese is the star, producing Chianti Classico wines that balance the power of Greve’s clay and marl soils with the elegance of traditional Tuscan winemaking. The estate also produces Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, including the Super Tuscan Il Pareto, while its historic cellar holds more than 25,000 bottles of older Folonari vintages.
