About the Wine

Dr. Tom Cullity, a well-known cardiologist, is a very respected name in Australia’s wine industry. His passion for wine started while working in a Hospital in Europe in 1950. This passion grew so much, that upon his return to his homeland, he had one goal in mind: “to produce fine wines in Western Australia.”

This goal led him to start the search for the best land to plant his first vineyard. He found a little paradise in Margaret River where he planted 19 acres, including the Houghton clone Cabernet Sauvignon, the core of Margaret River’s finest Cabernets.

Thanks to Tom's tenacity and persistence, much of the fame and prestige that Margaret River Valley enjoys today, is owed to him. He was one of the leaders and pioneers in starting the Margaret River Wine Region.

Vasse Felix, was established more than 55 years ago. This winery is Margaret River's founding wine estate. Today, Vasse Felix has 4 different vineyards located in some of the best terroirs in the region. All the vineyards are managed with organic viticulture and minimal intervention, following the mantra that “great wines are made in the vineyard, and they must be authentic expressions of their place.”

Bart Molony is the man behind these amazing wines. He joined the estate in 2004, and since then, he has been achieving award-winning wines. In 2011, Bart was awarded the Margaret River Wine Industry Association ‘Viti Excellence.” In 2012, he was named “Australian Winemaker of the Year” by Gourmet Traveller and one of his masterpieces, the 2010 Heytesbury Chardonnay, became one of the most awarded wines in Australian history with 11 trophies.

But awards don’t end up here, in 2012, the winery was recognized among the “Top 100 International Winery” by Wine & Spirits, awarded “Wine, Winery & Winemaker of Year” by the Good Wine Guide and in 2018 it was recognized “New World Winery of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast.

2019 Vasse Felix Premier Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine that showcases the quintessential attributes of the finest Margaret River Cabernet: sophistication, lavishness, and the ability to mature gracefully.Crafted annually since 1972, it stands as the definitive example of Margaret River's classic Cabernet Sauvignon.

Aging: French oak barrique 33% new, 67% 1-4 years old, 18 months.

Tasting Notes85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot. Immediately fragrant with elegant cranberry, and rose petals. Enticing bright forest fruits with deep blackberries and hints of fresh baked bread crust, earthy mushrooms, granite stone, and steel. Juicy, intense and luscious on entry with fast building tannin, and incredibly firm, yet super-luscious concentrated raspberry, fresh vanilla pods and a delicious meatiness.

Reviews

Open-knit aromas of red currant, cassis, and cherry mingle with more savory and characteristics like eucalyptus, seaweed, iodine, graphite, a whiff of smoke and tobacco leaf. Tannins are fine yet powerful, neatly supporting the juicy currant fruit. A line of fresh acidity is particularly lovely on this vintage. Drink now–2032. ~95 Wine Enthusiast

Clean, elegant liquorice and blackberry nose, with mint, dried herbs and lush fruit on the mid palate. It's ripe and full, with firm but fine tannins. ~94 Decanter

Vasse Felix is a savory house—it's important to understand in order to fully understand the wines, I believe. They are driven by savory, spicy tannin (reds) and chalky, structuring extract (whites). In this cool 2019 vintage, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is aromatically detailed, with cassis, mulberry, brine, nori, sun-dried kelp, iodine and five spice. On the palate, while the wine is structured and firm, no tannin can stop the mellifluous flow of fruit through the mouth. An impressive spool of flavor through the finish tells us about the potential this wine has for graceful aging in the cellar. Drink it at any time, but cellar it with confidence for 15 years plus. ~93+ Wine Advocate

This classically style 2019 Bordeaux blend brings together largely Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec and Petit Verdot plus a splash of Cabernet Franc. It's currently reserved and understated with a beautiful blend of blackcurrant and leathery aromas with a bright lift of violets and superbly integrated oak. A punchy, energetic palate follows with intense mulberry, blackcurrant and cedar flavours with a firm base of tannins. A long, strong finish suggests that time will only make it better. ~93 Vinous
