About the Wine
Yealands Wines are inspired by the coast that surrounds their property in New Zealand, so close to the ocean that the vines are often misted with sea spray. The beauty of the environment influences how Yealands crafts wine, respectful of nature and the land. This bright, energetic Pinot exudes the terroir of the cool growing region and is sure to find a welcome home in any serious Pinot drinkers glass.
Natalie Christensen, named by The Drinks Business as one of the World’s Most Influential Women in Wine in 2018, is a gifted winemaker with well over a decade of winemaking experience under her ever-colorful belt. Natalie became part of the fulltime Yealands winemaking team in 2015 having already worked for other notable New Zealand wineries Saint Clair Family Estate and Matahiwi Estate. Prior to joining Yealands, she was Winemaker at La Cana in Rias Baixas, Spain making albariño for the Jorge Ordonez group. She became Yealands’ Chief Winemaker at the end of 2018.
Yealands believes in sustainable winemaking and creating thoughtfully crafted wines that work in harmony with their landscape. Based in the Awatere Valley, the southernmost, coolest, and driest of Marlborough's growing regions. Yealands is one of only a handful of wineries around the world to be certified as carbon neutral and the first-ever to be certified from inception. Yealands' sustainable Seaview Vineyard is one of the most coastal vineyards in New Zealand; its proximity to the coastline provides distinctive mineral characteristic.
Tasting Notes: 100% Pinot Noir. Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Pinot Noir offers an intense nose with blackberries, boysenberry, subtle spice and cocoa. The palate is powerful and structured. Generous ripe black cherry and boysenberries flavors, balanced with fine tannins and hints of oak. This wine matches beautifully with red meat dishes, such as venison and lamb, wood-fired pizza, and hearty nachos.
Tasting Notes
100% Pinot Noir.
Critical Reviews
Ripe and generous primary fruit aromas lead into a supple juicy palate. Strawberry and red cherry dominate, hint of savoury oak. ~92 Decanter
This has some more complex style than the other Yealands 2019, packed with blueberry and violet aromas, some blood orange, as well as toasty and spicy oak. The palate has a plush, easygoing feel and holds smooth, fleshy dark-cherry flavor. Drink now. Screw cap. ~90 James Suckling
From a warm vintage, the Awatere-sourced 2019 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir seems to have benefited, as it doesn't show much of the region's typical green edge. On the nose, black cherries accented by hints of cola and spice abound, while the medium-bodied palate is concentrated and silky-textured, with a gently tannic finish that should support at least a few years of aging. ~90 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
