About The Wine

Only Sardinian grapes. That was the rule from the start, and it's the whole reason this wine matters.

Antonio Argiolas — born 1906, worked past 100 — pushed his sons Franco and Giuseppe toward one idea in the 1980s: a serious, long-lived red made only from Sardinian grapes. No Cabernet. No shortcuts.

They brought in Giacomo Tachis to help build it, and his student Mariano Murru, still the winery's technical director today. First harvest came in 1988. They held it back until 1991. The estate sits in Serdiana, in the Trexenta hills just north of Cagliari, farming 600 acres of native varieties.

The wine itself is Cannonau-led, filled in with Carignano, Bovale Sardo and Malvasia Nera. Fermentation runs warm, with a long maceration worked by delestage. Then roughly two years in French barrique and another year in bottle before it leaves the cellar.

What comes out is dark, structured and unmistakably Mediterranean — cedar, wild herbs, black fruit, a firm finish that doesn't apologize.

Give it an hour in a decanter. Then pour it with lamb, game, or a plate of aged Pecorino.

Cannonau leads the blend, backed by Carignano, Bovale Sardo and Malvasia Nera. Deep ruby moving toward garnet at the rim. The nose opens on cedar and Mediterranean brush before the fruit arrives — dark cherry, plum, a lift of dried rose and sweet spice. The palate is medium-plus to full, more polished than the old brooding Turrigas. Black and red fruit sit on a firm, dusty tannic frame. Cool-toned acidity keeps it moving. Graphite, warm earth and a bitter-edged herbal note run under everything. The finish is long, grippy and dry.

THE PRODUCER

Argiolas

Antonio Argiolas inherited seven acres of vines from his father in 1938. Antonio Argiolas was the first on the island to convert to modern viticulture to pursue quality over quantity. His sons, Franco and Giuseppe, replanted the vineyards in the 1980s with the goal of reducing yields and focusing exclusively on Sardinian grapes. Today, the third generation is at the helm of the estate, led by Valentina, Francesca, and Antonio Argiolas. The Argiolas family controls 600 acres planted to native Sardinian grapes in the areas of Trexenta and Sulcis. Antonio Argiolas founded the winery, starting with a three-hectare farm at Serdiana, 20 kilometers from Cagliari. The winery began at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1979, Antonio Argiolas traveled to Argentina and California, which inspired him to acquire larger estates including Selegas-Sa Tanca and Susini.
