About The Wine

Four acres. Gnarly old vines planted in St. Helena back in 1967. One family farming them like the dirt is sacred. That's where this Cabernet starts — a single Napa vineyard most people will never hear of, off a site so small it barely registers on a map.

Topel Winery got the Battuello Family's fruit in 2010 — a year now etched into Napa legend. Vinous Media scored it 97 points, calling it "a fabulous vintage that combines the structure and energy of a cold vintage with the ripeness of a warm year." Hand-harvested, cold-soaked, fermented on native yeast, then 23 months in French oak, 30% of it new. Old-school, low-intervention Napa Cabernet the way Napa used to make it, before the trophy prices and the waiting lists.

Now do the math. This is a 2010 — sixteen years old. A four-acre vineyard made a tiny amount of this wine, and sixteen years of people pulling corks means there's almost none of it left. You can't go back and make more 2010. You can't rush sixteen years. What's in the bottle is what exists, and every one that gets opened is one fewer in the world. When it's gone, it's gone for good.

And here's why that matters: the hard part — the waiting, the patience, the decade-plus most great Napa Cab demands before it shows its real face — is already done for you. Vinous said it plainly, that the best 2010 Cabernets should be cellared "for at least a few years, but preferably even longer." Sixteen years later, that long wait has been paid in full — by someone else. You're stepping in at the exact moment it's ready. The tannins that were once firm and gripping have softened and integrated. The fruit has folded into something deeper — savory, layered, tertiary. Leather, dried earth, a whisper of cigar box now sit alongside the raspberry and chocolate. This is a wine drinking in its prime window right now, not one you're gambling on. Pull the cork on a steak night and don't overthink it — just don't wait too long to find one, because aged Napa from a vintage this good doesn't come back around.

2010 is one for the books. Vinous Media awarded it 97 points, calling it "a fabulous vintage that combines the structure and energy of a cold vintage with the ripeness of a warm year." They noted that "the best 2010 Cabernets are full-bodied, flamboyantly ripe, and also tannic," and advised readers to "continue to cellar the 2010s for at least a few years, but preferably even longer." Sixteen years on, that wait is over — and it's all yours.

Sixteen years in the bottle changes everything. In the glass it's dark ruby fading to garnet at the rim — the telltale color of age. The nose has evolved past fresh fruit into something deeper: dried raspberry and cassis layered with leather, forest floor, tobacco, cigar box, and a savory, almost meaty complexity that only time builds. On the palate, the tannins that were once firm and grippy are now soft, fine, and fully resolved, the texture gone silky, the fruit and earth layering rather than competing. Nothing is sharp, nothing needs an hour to come around — it's all there, integrated and easy, drinking exactly where a great Napa Cab should land in its prime window. The producer's own one-word verdict still fits: Napa.

THE PRODUCER

Topel Winery

Topel Winery is a family-run, handcrafted producer founded in the late 1980s on a 160-acre mountain estate at the southern edge of Mendocino's Sanel Valley, west of Hopland. Sitting at 1,400 feet above the fog line and flanked by the Yorkville Highlands and Alexander Valley, the estate farms just 15 sustainable acres of Bordeaux varieties. Winemaker Martin Bernal-Hafner — who honed his craft at Paul Hobbs — works with a minimalist hand to let each hillside speak.
