About The Wine

In the heart of northern Alsace, the Wiebelsberg Grand Cru site holds a special place in the hearts of wine enthusiasts, with breathtaking views of the small town of Andlau. As one of only two Gran Cru vineyards in the area, you can expect only the best of the best. These scenic rolling hills are home to some outstanding grape varieties which radiate elegance and finesse - with the 2020 Boeckel Grand Cru Wiebelsberg a testament to that.

With its steep slopes and unique soils rich in iron, silica, and quartz crystals, every sip of wine from Wiebelsberg tells a story of the land it hails from. This story stretches back to the late 19th century when the Boeckel family first began exporting their wines, driven by a vision to cross local borders. Today, brothers Thomas and Jean-Daniel Boeckel lovingly tend to the 25-hectare farm, with Thomas leading the way as the visionary winemaker.

Their passion for winemaking is evident in every bottle, from their bone-dry Rieslings to their expressive Pinot Noirs and exquisite Crémants. With every sip, you're not just experiencing wine; you're immersing yourself in a centuries-old tradition upheld by a family dedicated to crafting wines of quality and character.

The 2020 Boeckel Grand Cru Wiebelsberg is one of their masterpieces. A dry, concentrated yet complex wine that perfectly captures the region it’s from and the skilful hands that produced it.

Aging: After a slow fermentation, the wine was aged for 12-14 months on the lees.

100% Riesling. This Riesling offers great richness and ripe stone-fruit aromas. The wine is in the mouth, but well-balanced with lively minerality and acidity. Considering the wine is fresh and vibrant, it is best paired with fish, shellfish, seafood, white meat and tangy dishes like sauerkraut.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aged on the full lees for 12 months, the 2020 Grand Cru Wiebelsberg Riesling opens with a super intense and aromatic, lemon-fruity, concentrated and iodine bouquet with lovely phenolic notes. Full-bodied, lush and intense as well as saline on the palate, this is a dense, rich, tight, very complex and powerful but tensioned Wiebelsberg with an extraordinarily long, complex and stimulating finish. 14% stated alcohol. Diam cork. ~95 Robert Parker.

The 2020 Riesling Wiebelsberg Grand Cru is from a very steep site of Triassic sandstone. Fermented in stainless steel and aged 14 months in foudre, the nose is immediately savory, reminiscent of potentilla on a hot stone. Yarrow and peach add aromatic flourishes. The palate is steely, slender, concentrated, reverberating with freshness, speaking of depth. This has inherent herbal spice and comes with the intensity, urgency and power of 2020. This deserves to age. ~ 93 Vinous Media.

A rich dry riesling that’s rippling with ripe stone-fruit aromas. Although this is built on a grand scale (and has 14% alcohol), it shows impressive energy and lively mineral acidity that keep it on the straight and narrow. Interesting dried-sage note at the long, structured finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling.
