About The Wine

Roberto Bianco has run Cascina Morassino since 1984, farming 3.5 hectares at the foot of Ovello — one of the first vineyards to ever make Barbaresco and the northernmost cru in the town. It's a one-person operation, and Roberto runs out of wine every year before the next vintage is bottled. That's the kind of cult micro-estate people hunt for.

Ovello sits at the coolest, most northern edge of Barbaresco's eleven crus, and the 2020 vintage plays to its strengths: taut structure, mineral tension, the kind of bony elegance that makes this appellation legendary. While the southern crus give power and richness, Ovello delivers finesse and longevity.

In the glass, this is classic Barbaresco: deep garnet with ruby reflections, aromas of ripe cherries, strawberries, roses, and subtle earthy undertones threading through spices and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied and structured, showing red berries, pomegranate, sour cherry, star anise, and a hazelnut note that runs from mid-palate through the finish. Firm tannins and racy acidity provide the backbone that rewards patience.

Delicious now if you give it an hour in the decanter. Better in three years.

This is Nebbiolo from a master working one of the appellation's most historic sites, priced where serious Barbaresco should be.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Pale ruby in the glass, with a darker fruit character, well-defined raspberry and blackberry. Ripe and concentrated. Rose and violet enhance the aromatic profile. Balsamic style on the palate, with large, dense, velvety tannins, plentiful in volume before a chocolaty finish. Refreshing acidity balances the lush character. Ovello is one of the cooler and more austere MGAs in Barbaresco. The expectation could be really high in a warm vintage such as 2020. ~ 92 Decanter

The 2020 Barbaresco Ovello is a powerful, intense wine. Black cherry, leather, cedar, tobacco, licorice and dried herbs are all dialed up. The Ovello has more fruit intensity, extraction and oak influence than the straight Barbaresco. It's a very good wine, but there is some loss of site character.~ 91 Vinous Media
