About the Wine

Giorgio Primo 2020 is a statement—one of the most commanding, polished, and cellar-worthy reds coming out of Italy today. Crafted by visionary winemaker Giampaolo Motta, it’s his ultimate tribute to legacy and lineage, named for both his grandfather and first son. And it shows. This is the wine where everything—soil, altitude, barrel, and obsession—comes together.

In 2020, nature threw curveballs. Frost decimated much of the Merlot, forcing Cabernet Sauvignon into the spotlight—and what a spotlight performance it delivers. The blend (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot) is pulled from the most prized vineyard parcels—rich in schist and clay—then aged for 18 months in 80% new French oak. The result? A wine that rivals the world’s elite: dense, structured, and wildly expressive, yet silky and seductive from start to finish.

Born in the limestone-streaked hills of Panzano in Chianti, at one of Tuscany’s highest and most dynamic estates, Giorgio Primo is the apex of what Super Tuscan wines can be. Collectors, take note—this is your showpiece. Drinkers, prepare to be floored. This isn’t just the best wine from La Massa. It’s one of the best from Italy. Period.

Aging: 18 months in 80% new French oak

Tasting Notes

Made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Giorgio Primo is a bold, structured, and opulent Super Tuscan with serious pedigree. Aromas of cassis, blackberry, cedar, and violets leap from the glass, followed by layers of mocha, tobacco, mint, and graphite. The palate is dense and polished, with ripe black fruit wrapped in compact, fine tannins. Full-bodied and incredibly long, this powerhouse wine is built to age but already offers stunning depth and allure.

Reviews

Clear, rich ruby with a fine purple shimmer. Compact nose with notes of dark currants, black cherry, lots of blackberry, some cardamom. Lots of supple, dense tannins on the palate, embedded in fruit texture, with rich cassis notes and light bitter notes in the finish. ~97 Falstaff

This is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot that ages partially in new oak (or 50% of the wine does) for 16 months. The Tenuta La Massa 2020 Giorgio Primo is darkly saturated in appearance with rich aromas of black fruit, spice and smoked tobacco. The wine is textured and quite opulent, especially in this warm vintage. It's also more accessible, even at this young age. Production is 11,500 bottles. ~96 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

The 2020 Giorgio Primo is fabulous. This is a rare vintage in which Cabernet Sauvignon takes the lead, and it does so in grand style. Frost took out 70% of the Merlot and most of the Sangiovese. In response to those dramatic events, Giampaolo Motta and his team turned out an absolutely brilliant wine. Blackberry, lavender, mint, dried herbs, mocha and a kiss of French oak all build in the glass. This exotic, full-throttle Panzano red is positively stunning. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. ~96 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

This shows intensity and richness on the nose with aromas of cassis, crushed blackberries and hints of cedar, tobacco, violets and graphite. It’s structured and focused on the palate, with a medium to full body. It shows depth and broad structure filled with firm, compact tannins that run the whole length of the wine. Very long. It is already very attractive from its fruit profile perspective, but the quality of its tannins and structure suggests long aging potential. Better after 2027. ~96 James Suckling
