About The Wine

Ask any serious Brunello drinker to name five estates that matter, and Poggio di Sotto comes up every time. It's not the loudest name in Montalcino — it's the one the trade brings up first.

The estate sits on the southeastern slope of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, at the foot of Monte Amiata, where old-vine Sangiovese grows in schistic galestro soil that shows up in the glass as a mineral, saline thread running under the fruit. Fermentation is slow and spontaneous, followed by 36 months in 30-hectoliter Slavonian oak — a patient, restrained style built for elegance over power.

The 2020 is Poggio di Sotto through and through: pale, glittering ruby, floral and red-fruited, with the estate's signature combination of silky tannin and real acidity. It's structured enough to reward a decade in the cellar, but it already drinks with the kind of grace that's made this producer a benchmark for the appellation.

I don't say this about many Brunellos: if you only try one Poggio di Sotto in your life, this is the vintage to start with.

100% Sangiovese. Bright, glittering ruby, paler than most Brunello and true to house style. The nose opens on fresh cherry and pomegranate, with violet, wild rose, and crushed stone underneath, plus a savory, saline edge that keeps it from ever tipping sweet or jammy. On the palate: silky, polished tannins, a pronounced core of acidity, and a long finish closing on citrus rind, mint, and warm spice. Still young — give it air, or better, give it a decade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"Bright, glittering ruby red with a shiny core. Inviting and fragrant nose of fresh cherry, subtle hints of geranium, pomegranate, freshly baked white bread and fine savouriness: complex and inviting. Very elegant on the palate with a great sweet core, polished tannins and a salty undertone. Open-hearted and accessible, it drinks excellently, with an aftertaste of candle wax and mint. Great." ~99 Falstaff

"The thing that makes Poggio di Sotto stand out from the pack is its substance. Brunello is always a wine with weight and heft, but this one has a density that feels all encompassing—like entering an entirely new universe." ~98 Wine Enthusiast

"Very much still a baby at the time of my tasting, the Poggio di Sotto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino shares many similarities with the epic 2016 vintage in terms of its pretty perfumes and polished length. However, this elegant wine does not have the same sheer inner power. This bottle ultimately offers a fresh and charming interpretation of Sangiovese. This is a delicate wine with floral aromas, wild rose, crushed stone and white cherry. Aged in large Slavonian oak casks, it requires more time to flesh out. Harvest started the last week of August and finished the first week of October, which represents a conscious decision to start picking earlier than most. The vineyards are planted on schistic galestro soils, and that territorial imprint comes through strongly in all of these wines. I love that refreshing hint of lemon rind or navel orange at the very end." ~97+ Wine Advocate

"Restrained strawberries and cherries, with a touch of lavender and a lot of licorice. Super juicy on the palate with thick, chalky tannins at the moment, yet they are balanced by supple, sweet fruit. Medium- to full-bodied with a very savory aftertaste. Though pleasant, it's not fully ready to drink now, and there's a lot of potential for the long haul." ~97 James Suckling

"Ranging from violet to cherry, the aromas are clear, well-delineated, delicate yet incisive. An elegant and slender profile with graceful tannins and a symphonic balance. Extremely long with a savoury finish. The certified organic winery covers 20ha on the south-eastern slope at Castelnuovo dell'Abate at an altitude of about 450m." ~97 Decanter
