About The Wine

The Isole e Olena estate was founded in 1956, when Francesco De Marchi purchased two adjoining Chianti Classico hamlets — Isole and Olena — near Castellina in Chianti.

It was his son Paolo who set the estate on its path toward greatness, arriving in 1976 and bringing with him a laser-sharp focus on quality at a time when Chianti Classico was still struggling to define its own identity. Paolo overhauled vineyard practices from the ground up, pioneered massal selection of Sangiovese clones — a program so rigorous that vines needed at least five performance tags over ten years to make the cut — and in doing so, created a genetic library that now supplies replanting programs across the entire Chianti Classico denomination. In 1980, he bottled the first vintage of Cepparello, named after a small seasonal creek that originates in the highest point of the estate's vineyards.

Pure Sangiovese wines could not legally be called Chianti Classico at the time, so Cepparello was released as a Vino da Tavola — one of the original Super Tuscans.

In 2022, Isole e Olena was acquired by the French EPI Group, whose wine portfolio also includes Biondi-Santi and Charles Heidsieck. New estate director Emanuele Reolon worked alongside De Marchi for a full year before taking the reins, ensuring the estate's philosophy of authenticity and environmental stewardship continues uninterrupted.

Each year, Cepparello is produced from a selection of grapes from the best and oldest estate vineyards, located on the north-western flank of Chianti Classico, on mostly galestro soils at 400–480 meters above sea level, with south and southwest exposures. Vines range from 13 to 55 years of age.

The 2020 is 100% Sangiovese, fermented in conical French oak vats and aged for 18 months in barriques — 95% French, 5% American, one-third new — followed by a full year of bottle aging before release.

The 2020 vintage commenced with a mild, dry winter. Temperatures dropped significantly in March, requiring care in the vineyard to prevent frost damage. Summer was dry and mild with steady conditions through late August, when the region saw some rainfall — but weather calmed in September, and the harvest delivered excellent results in both quality and quantity.

Eye: Deep, almost somber ruby with remarkable density and intensity.

Nose: Black cherry, plum, graphite, dried herbs, and lavender — complex and layered, with an undercurrent of crushed stone, candied orange peel, and sweet spice. There is both power and precision here, the dark fruit kept in check by a cool, mineral restraint.

Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with dark plum, redcurrant, and rusty iron moving into sweet spice and earth. Tannins are ripe and supple but structured; the finish is long, dry, and saline — Sangiovese at its most commanding. Needs time.

Drinking Window: 2025–2045. Decant generously now; built for the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2020 Cepparello is a total stunner, just as it was last year. Deeply colored, layered and explosive in the glass, the 2020 possesses striking textural richness and overall intensity. Black cherry, graphite, plum, spice and lavender flesh out effortlessly. There's tremendous pedigree and sheer stature here. Cepparello is surely one of the wines of the year. ~97 Vinous Media

Smoky and austere wine with a restrained nose of dark cherries allied to assertive bergamot and slightly chocolatey depth. Full-bodied with a smooth attack, then dense and velvety with a vibrant and energetic palate. Juicy and toasty in the aftertaste. Drink or hold.~ 96 James Suckling

Supple and smooth, the 2020 Cepparello brings Sangiovese to soaring heights in a manner only Paolo De Marchi can manage. This is his second to last vintage before he would retire and sell this historic estate. The wine opens to medium to full-bodied concentration with dark plum and redcurrant. Those cede to sweet spice, earth, crushed stone, rusty nail and candied orange peel. Give the wine more time to flesh out with cellar age. It registers a powerful 15% alcohol content. ~96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Expressive and sumptuous from the get-go, this red features cherry, strawberry, rose, orange peel, mineral and Tuscan herb aromas and flavors. Sangiovese. Best from 2025 through 2045. ~96 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Isole e Olena

Isole and Olena were two small residential hamlets located one kilometer apart with about 130 people. Isole e Olena officially came into being in 1956 when Francesco De Marchi, a lawyer from Piemonte, united the two villages into one estate. In 1976, Paolo De Marchi took control of the estate and introduced a revolutionary vision focused on quality over quantity.

In 2022, the De Marchi family handed ownership to Christopher Descours and his family. Emanuele Reolon serves as Director of the Estate. Founded in 1956 by Francesco De Marchi. Paolo De Marchi, Francesco's son, took over the estate in 1975. Paolo De Marchi had a background in agricultural studies and revolutionized the winery starting in the vineyards.

Isole e Olena is considered among the pioneer estates who led the quality renaissance of Chianti Classico starting in the 1970s.
