About The Wine

Kanonkop Wines has stood at the forefront of South African winemaking since patriarch Paul Sauer first cultivated the farm's lower Simonsberg slopes in the 1930s. The property dates to 1929, with estate-bottled wines first released under the Kanonkop label from the 1973 vintage.

Now in its fourth generation, the estate is owned by brothers Paul and Johann Krige and guided by winemaker Abrie Beeslaar, who has shaped Kanonkop's voice since 2002.

Widely considered the South African equivalent of a First Growth, Kanonkop has made Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon its specialties, with its classic Stellenbosch reds earning benchmark status across the globe. The estate's name — "cannon hillock" in Afrikaans — refers to the butte above the farm where a cannon was fired in the 18th and 19th centuries to alert local farmers of trading ships arriving at Table Bay.

2020 Kadette Cabernet Sauvignon represents Kanonkop's commitment to delivering estate-level craft at an accessible price.

Sourced from vineyards on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg at 197–395 feet above sea level, the fruit grows on southwest-facing slopes in predominantly red decomposed granite and Hutton soils with high clay content and excellent water retention.

The 2020 harvest was shaped by dry conditions and moderate temperatures, with sustained warmth through late March delivering full maturity in the late-ripening Cabernet vines.

Fermentation took place in open-top concrete fermenters with mechanical punchdowns every two hours, and the wine was matured for 12 months in older 225-liter French oak barrels.

The result is a classic Stellenbosch Cabernet of genuine depth and mid-term aging potential, made with the same care and conviction as the estate's top-tier bottlings.

Eye: Deep ruby with youthful violet hints.

Nose: Opulent aromas of blueberries, plums, and red currants, with underlying hints of dried herbs and subtle oak spice adding complexity.

Palate: The medium-weight palate delivers ripe black fruit flavors — cassis, plum skin, blackberry — framed by plush yet structuring tannins and ample acidity that lends lift and grip through the close. The tannins are finely textured, anchoring a plush fruit core, with concentrated blue- and blackberry flavors and delicate acidity resolving into a classic Stellenbosch Cabernet finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Savory notes of grilled rosemary and olives waft from the glass, joined by currants and wild berries. Lovely texture here, with sleek tannins, medium to full body and a long, creamy finish. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling

~92 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine

Blackberry leaf, cassis and plum skin all dance on the nose of this wine, with supporting accents of singed herbs, tobacco leaf and cedar. The medium-weight palate is like crushed velvet in texture, with ripe black-fruit flavors framed by plush yet structuring tannins and ample acidity that lends some lift along with the grip of the close. It's well balanced and attractive now, though it should hold well through 2026. ~90 Wine Enthusiast

A dark, juicy, medium- to full-bodied red, with a streak of tarry smoke underscoring flavors of baked black cherry and black plum reduction, with notes of licorice and dried parsley and sage. Firm, chalky tannins emerge to trim the finish. Drink now through 2026. 15,000 cases made, 2,102 cases imported. ~90 Wine Spectator
