2020 Schloss Gobelsburg Ried Heiligenstein 1 Otw Riesling Kamptal

Schloss Gobelsburg holds an 850-year history in Austria's Kamptal, with vineyard records reaching back to 1171. When Michael Moosbrugger took the two-generation lease in 1996 — partnering with Willi Brundlmayer and Edwige — he inherited custodianship of one of the region's most legendary parcels: Ried Heiligenstein.

Heiligenstein was one of the first Austrian vineyards to carry its own name on a label, over a century ago. The site has since been classified Erste Lage — Premier Cru — by Osterreichische Traditionsweinguter. Thirty-five hectares of narrow terraces climb the south- and west-facing slope, where sandstone delivers the perfume, spice, and electric tension that made the site famous. Gobelsburg farms three hectares across two parcels in the south-facing section.

Moosbrugger is a forthright traditionalist: single-vineyard wines mature on fine lees in neutral wood — large oval casks unique to Austria, mounted on wheels, 2,825 liters each. The result marries site character with textural richness that should appeal to anyone who loves cool-climate Chardonnay. The 2020 opens with green-gold clarity, minerals and spice driving the core, a slight peach note giving way to wet stone intensity. Medium to full-bodied, crisp-edged, dry, with a long finish that keeps unfolding.
