About The Wine

The story of Siro Pacenti is woven into the founding chapters of Brunello di Montalcino itself. In 1970, Siro Pacenti established the Pelagrilli estate with a handful of Sangiovese vines in the Canalicchio district, just north and east of the medieval hill village of Montalcino — the site that would grow to become the permanent seat of the winery. Siro's son Giancarlo assumed control in 1988 after completing his studies in Bordeaux, immediately overseeing the family's first major investment in cellar infrastructure and hygiene. In 1990, Giancarlo expanded the estate with the purchase of the Piancornello vineyard in the southeast of Montalcino — planted in the 1960s by his maternal grandfather — whose gravelly soils and southerly exposure complement Pelagrilli's sandy-clay and cooler growing environment. Together, Pelagrilli and Piancornello make Siro Pacenti one of Montalcino's largest owners of Sangiovese vines aged 40 years or older, comprising roughly one-fifth of the appellation's total old-vine plantings.

In the cellar, Giancarlo's approach is defined by precision above all: meticulous hand-harvesting, optical sorting, and the exclusive use of custom-made new French barriques — chosen not for flavor, but for cleanliness. The wood for his barrels is seasoned at least twenty years and given a very light toast, ensuring that what ends up in the glass is Sangiovese, not oak.

The Pelagrilli bottling draws from the estate's northeast Montalcino vineyard, where the wines show great fragrance, silkiness, and relatively soft tannins. Vines must be at least 25 years old to contribute to Pelagrilli, with fruit harvested by hand and individually sorted by optical sorter.

Aged 24 months in new French barrique before bottling, the wine is produced unfiltered — natural sediment in the bottle is considered evidence of Siro Pacenti's winemaking philosophy, and decanting before serving is recommended. Production of the 2020 stands at 26,000 bottles.

Eye: Deep, saturated garnet with ruby highlights and bright clarity at the rim.

Nose: Especially bold on the bouquet, with aromas of baked fruit, toasted spice, sweet herb, and grilled rosemary, alongside a hint of cedar and barbecue smoke. Plum sauce, crushed black cherry, and balsamic spice add a darkly seductive depth as the wine opens.

Palate: Very round and fleshed out, covering all corners of the mouth — a big-boned wine with powdery young tannins and a velvety finish. Silken in feel, with cool-toned acidity and racy wild berry fruits, finishing incredibly long with hints of black raspberry and sour cherry pits over a layer of sweet tannins.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

From 24-year-old vines, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Pelagrilli pours a saturated red hue and is a luxuriously expressive, detailed wine with notes of polished leather, fresh red plum, sweet tobacco, potpourri, and currants. The palate is full yet compact and offers refreshing, energetic acidity, refined tannins, and a long-lasting finish with mouthwatering saltiness. An elegant red, it’s less structured in the range and more approachable. ~ 97 Jeb Dunnuck

A round and juicy red with berry, cherry, mushroom and wet-earth character on both the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied with integrated tannins that are soft and luscious. Long, flavorful finish. ~96 James Suckling

Showing an especially bold bouquet and rich concentration, the Siro Pacenti 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli is a big expression of Sangiovese by all means, but the wine is also balanced. The intensity is played up with aromas of baked fruit, toasted spice, sweet herb and grilled rosemary, and there is a hint of redwood and cedar or barbecue smoke. To the palate, the wine is very round and fleshed out. It covers all corners of the mouth. This is a big-boned wine with powdery young tannins and a velvety finish. Aging takes place in French barrique, which has always been the stylistic choice favored by this estate.
~94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Plum sauce and sage combine with crushed black cherries and balsamic spice to create a darkly seductive bouquet as the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli comes to life in the glass. It's silken in feel with cool-toned acidity and racy wild berry fruits that flow across the palate with ease. Incredibly long and expertly balanced, the 2020 leaves hints of black raspberry and sour cherry pits over a layer of sweet tannins. Patience will be required but also rewarded. ~94 Vinous Media

There's a mix of cherry, plum, earth and oak spice flavors in this red, which starts out linear in profile, yet fluid, before expanding on the finish as the dense, dusty tannins flex their muscles. Best from 2027 through 2042. 2,167 cases made, 750 cases imported. ~ 90 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Siro Pacenti

Siro Pacenti bought his estate and planted his first vines in 1970. In 1988, Giancarlo Pacenti took over operations and produced the first Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino that same year.

At the beginning of the Nineties, the estate expanded to include land south of Montalcino (Piancornello) where Giancarlo's grandfather had planted five hectares of Sangiovese in the 1960s.

The property is north of Montalcino, in Pelagrilli, and overlooks Siena with 22 hectares of Sangiovese in fresh, clay soils. The Pacenti estate was established in 1970 with the purchase of property north of Montalcino (Pelagrilli) by Siro.

Siro planted important vineyards in the fresh, clay soils of the land overlooking Siena. In 1988, management passed into the hands of Giancarlo. 1988 was the year Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino Siro Pacenti were bottled for the first time.
