About The Wine

Siro Pacenti bought his estate in 1970 and planted the first vines north of Montalcino in Pelagrilli — 22 hectares of Sangiovese in fresh clay soils overlooking Siena. In 1988, his son Giancarlo took over and bottled the estate's first Brunello. In the early Nineties, the family expanded south to Piancornello, where Giancarlo's grandfather had planted five hectares of Sangiovese in the 1960s. The estate practices sustainable agriculture and bottles unfiltered.

Vecchie Vigne comes from two vineyards with vines over 35 years old. The old vines restrict yields and concentrate energy on the grapes. Harvesting is manual, with sorting on tables before and after destemming. Annual production is around 30,000 bottles — small for Brunello.

2020 was a warm, dry summer that put Sangiovese under pressure. Where well managed, the heat turned into concentrated, supple fruit. The northern slope of Pelagrilli absorbed the heat better than the southern sites. The wines aren't jammy or overly alcoholic — they show freshness and brightness, with structure to improve over the next decade and beyond.

Vinification is in steel at controlled temperature, then aged 24 months in 225-liter French oak and finished in bottle. The result is tightly wound and inward, with savory herbs, cedar shavings, ground cloves, and blood orange in the bouquet. Velvety smooth and deep across the palate, with spiced cherry, wild berry, a tart blackberry edge, and violet florals. The tannin structure is long and compact, still fresh through the finish.

James Suckling called it "intense, overt and fruit-focused" with "a deep tannin structure" that needs at least three years to come around. Vinous noted the wine is "impossibly long and tannic, yet still fresh." 98 Suckling, 95 Wine Advocate, 94 Wine Spectator, 94 Vinous. Pull the cork in 2028 and watch it unfold for a decade after that.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aromas of black cherries, bark, black truffle, ink and lead pencil follow through to a full body with perfectly integrated tannins that are caressing yet impressive and add intensity and focus to the wine. The silky tannins caress every inch of your palate. Savory finish. Drink or hold. ~ 98 James Suckling

Made with fruit from the estate's oldest vines and aged in French barrique, the Siro Pacenti 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne has a spicy note with cardamom or cinnamon over a bold bouquet that is darkly enriched with all kinds of black and purple fruits. You get a hint of eucalyptus or rosemary that underlines a medicinal side to this wine. To the palate, this vintage is slightly more accessible for sure, but the house style prizes concentration and bold tannic structure that will give you runway for aging. There is a hint of dustiness or chalkiness on the tannins. This is a 16,000-bottle release. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Powerful and layered in the sensorial profile it shows notes of black plums, blackberries, dark chocolate, sage, bay leaves, green tea leaves, marjoram, wild thyme. In the background nuances of green mandarins and bergamot enliven the secondary scene. Full body, perfectly ripe and polymerized tannins and a noble and mellow finish. Better from 2027. ~95 WinesCritic.com

Tightly wound and inward, with an intense mix of savory herbs, cedar shavings, ground cloves and blood orange. Velvety smooth and deep, yet surprisingly vibrant, with spiced-cherry and wild berry fruits. Impossibly long and tannic, yet still fresh. ~94 Vinous Media

A dark, distinctive version that veers toward black currant and blackberry fruit, showing fine concentration and structure. Iron, earth, eucalyptus and Mediterranean scrub notes augment the fruit, delivering an anomaly for the vintage. Almost feels more like '19 than '20. Best from 2028 through 2045. 1,167 cases made, 340 cases imported. ~94 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Siro Pacenti

Siro Pacenti bought his estate and planted his first vines in 1970. In 1988, Giancarlo Pacenti took over operations and produced the first Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino that same year.

At the beginning of the Nineties, the estate expanded to include land south of Montalcino (Piancornello) where Giancarlo's grandfather had planted five hectares of Sangiovese in the 1960s.

The property is north of Montalcino, in Pelagrilli, and overlooks Siena with 22 hectares of Sangiovese in fresh, clay soils. The Pacenti estate was established in 1970 with the purchase of property north of Montalcino (Pelagrilli) by Siro.

Siro planted important vineyards in the fresh, clay soils of the land overlooking Siena. In 1988, management passed into the hands of Giancarlo. 1988 was the year Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino Siro Pacenti were bottled for the first time.
