About The Wine

The Ritchie Vineyard in Sonoma, California, stands as a testament to Kent Ritchie’s enduring passion and commitment, spanning decades of meticulous care. The unique soil composition and cool, foggy climate result in fruit with natural minerality and balanced acidity, creating wines that are fresh, vibrant, and lively.

From the verdant valley slopes to the stately redwood canopies, across the windswept coastal reaches to the rich peaks of volcanic earth, Matt Sands and Philippe Melka know no bounds in their search for the highest caliber vineyards in Northern California.

Waypoint wines are crafted with fruit sourced from some of the most outstanding terroirs in Napa Valley. Winemakers Melka and Sands say, “It is about letting the wines speak for themselves and listening to how the historical terroir is expressed."

Crafted by these two wine rock stars, Philippe Melka and Matt Sands. Melka needs no introduction. This 100-point winemaker, originally from Bordeaux, started his wine journey in Chateau Haut Brion. He’s the mastermind behind some of Napa Valley's most celebrated wines. And Matt Sands, a talented winemaker originally from New Zealand, has forged his expertise in some of the most iconic wineries in the world, like Man O' War, Goldie Vineyard, Stonybridge Vineyard, and Screaming Eagle. Together, they’ve created this piece of art.

This 2020 Chardonnay has an impeccable balance between richness and freshness makes it a true delight, embodying the essence of the renowned Ritchie Vineyard terroir in every sip.

No matter which direction their compass might point, their focus remains singular: to craft small-lot, single-vineyard wines that best represent a varietal and its unique growing location, all while ensuring each wine is absolutely delicious and infinitely drinkable.

100% Chardonnay.

On the nose, notes of ripe golden apple, white peach, and Meyer lemon entwine with subtle hints of toasted hazelnuts and a delicate wisp of vanilla.

The palate is greeted by a blend of luscious orchard fruits and citrus zest, supported by a subtle creaminess from its expertly managed neutral oak fermentation. Layers of complexity emerge as flavors of honeyed pear, crème brûlée, and a touch of flint unfold gracefully, leading to a long, vibrant finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Winemaker Matt Sands sourced Old Wente Clone Chardonnay from Blocks G and E of the famous Ritchie Vineyard in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. A fresh squeeze of ripe lemon lifts out of the glass, accompanied by white flowers, pineapple rind and guava. The palate is incredibly plush and dense with Meyer lemon, apricot and coconut shavings; all kept fresh and lively by a deep mid-palate salinity and grip. Aged 18 months in 62% new French oak barrels. Waypoint is a label in the New Frontier Wine Co. portfolio. The wines are produced by Matt Sands and Philippe Melka, along with assistant winemaker Mark Pittman. ~ 94 Decanter

Grapes for the 2020 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard were picked on August 25. The wine was barrel fermented and matured for 18 months in 35% new French oak. It has alluring aromas of quince, peach, graham cracker, jasmine and almonds. The medium-bodied palate combines expansive, savory flavors with bright acidity and flinty tones, and it has a long, honeyed finish. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. 189 cases produced. ~ 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
