About the Wine

Since the early 1920s, the Cuilleron family has been crafting exceptional wines in the Northern Rhône Valley, particularly in the prestigious Condrieu and St. Joseph appellations.

Yves Cuilleron is a winemaker who studied in Burgundy before embarking on his illustrious career in 1987. His expertise and love for the craft have expanded the Cuilleron estate, making it a reference point for Northern Rhône wines.

The Cuilleron estate, located in the picturesque village of Verlieu, spans an impressive 128 acres. Within this vast vineyard, 54 acres are dedicated to the prized Condrieu appellation

Yves Cuilleron is committed to sustainable and organic farming practices. No insecticides are used, ensuring that each bottle of Les Chaillets is not only a delight to the palate but also a tribute to eco-friendly winemaking.

Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie La Madinière hails from a 12-acre vineyard in the northern appellation with south/southeast exposure and schist-rich soil. High-density planting (8,000-10,000 vines/ha) ensures quality, with no insecticides and organic-only fertilizers preserving biodiversity. Hand-harvested grapes are sorted, crushed, partially destemmed, and undergo a three-week open-vat maceration before aging 18 months in barrels. This wine is delightful young (4-5 years) with fruity aromas or can be aged (10+ years) for evolved notes.

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new).

Tasting Notes

97% Syrah, 3% Viognier. A pleasant, moreish nose of dark fruits, roasted notes and menthol to finish. On the palate, harmonious and juicy. Fresh, sprightly finish. Subtle, silky tannins

Critical Reviews

Opaque magenta. Spice-accented aromas of dark fruit liqueur, licorice and candied violet, with a smoky bacon element building as the wine opens up. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering juicy blueberry, kirsch and spicecake flavors and a subtle touch of exotic spices. Round, harmonious tannins shape a long, penetrating finish that leaves behind a sappy blue fruit note. 50% new oak. ~94 Vinous Media
