About The Wine

There's something old-fashioned about the 2021 Brunellos, in the best possible way — fresh, graceful, and built the way Montalcino used to build them. This is a textbook example.

It comes from Altesino, the house that introduced the "cru" idea to Montalcino back in the 1970s from its 14th-century home at Palazzo Altesi. The estate bottling is 100% Sangiovese Grosso off four vineyard sites, aged over three years in large Slavonian oak — no makeup, just structure and fruit.

Expect violet, wild berry and tobacco on the nose, then cherry and plum on a palate that's medium-to-full, firmly tannic, and lifted by real acidity. It's savory rather than sweet, which is exactly why it belongs at dinner.

Open it tonight with an hour's air, or cellar it 10–15 years. Osso buco, braised short ribs, or a hard aged pecorino — this is Brunello doing its job.

100% Sangiovese Grosso. Violet and wild berry on the nose, layered with tobacco, cocoa, and a touch of vanilla from Slavonian oak. Bright cherry and plum on the palate, fine-grained tannins, and a savory, high-acid finish that keeps everything lifted and food-friendly.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"A lively Brunello with aromas of plums, ripe cherries, cedar and teak. Crunchy and linear with lovely energy at the end. ~95 James Suckling

"The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a bright red hue and opens with citrus-tinged aromatics of tangerine, red cherries, dried herbs, and pressed flowers. Medium-bodied, it has a focused, linear feel on the palate, with well-defined tannins, brisk acidity, and a salty, mouthwatering finish. Drink this vibrant, classic effort over the coming 15 years. Drink 2026-2041." ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino mixes violet and lavender tones before settling on stemmed wild strawberries. It is remarkably fresh and fruit-forward, with a core of tantalizing acidity elevating depths of ripe red and blue fruits. This finishes with staining length and edgy tannins, leaving a raspberry concentration and nuances of autumnal spice." ~93 Vinos Media

"For the estate Brunello, Altesino draws on components from 50ha spread out over seven distinct pockets of Montalcino. Aged in large Slavonian oak casks, it proposes scents of cinnamon, forest brush and walnut. Packed with both dark wild berries and red cherry compote, this remains savoury rather than sweet. It is tightly knit in structure with just enough concentration and brawn. Tannins are well defined and provide a dry, chalky bite on the finish." ~93 Decanter

THE PRODUCER

Altesino

Crafted with the expertise of master distiller Gioacchino Nannoni, Altesino's Grappa di Brunello was first created in 1977. The fresh pomace is distilled just hours after racking in a copper still using a discontinuous method with low-degree columns.
