About The Wine

Bodegas Alto Moncayo was founded in 2002 with one goal: become the world reference for high-quality Garnacha. They started by selecting some of the oldest vines in Campo de Borja — gnarly bushes planted as far back as the early 1900s through the 1970s, clinging to the slopes of the Moncayo foothills at 500 to 800 meters.

Garnacha from these high-altitude sites develops something the flat plains can't match: slow ripening that preserves minerality and aromatic intensity while building ripe, voluminous fruit. The strict vineyard selection, the rocky soil, the microclimate — it all shows in the glass.

This is the entry point into the Alto Moncayo range, but the farming doesn't change. Only the most perfectly mature clusters are selected, carried in small crates to prevent crushing, then sorted again at triage tables. Malolactic fermentation happens in French and American oak, then the wine sees 16 to 24 months in new barrels — a level of treatment you'd expect from wines twice the price.

Deep ruby in the glass, with aromas of violets, currant, and blackberries. The fruit is balanced by floral and spice notes, with hints of nuanced oak adding complexity. Unctuous and voluminous on the palate — friendly, mature tannins and a long, persistent finish with real aging potential. Rich and smoky, with toast, grilled herbs, and espresso running underneath.

$31.99 for old-vine Garnacha built like a collector bottle. The kind of wine that makes you stop buying supermarket reds.
