About The Wine

Let me tell you about Torre Muga — the wine that convinced the world Rioja could stand toe-to-toe with Bordeaux's First Growths. Bodegas Muga isn't some upstart chasing trends. Founded in 1932 in Haro, the beating heart of Rioja Alta, this family-owned estate has spent nearly a century perfecting a philosophy almost nobody else still practices: fermentation in open wooden vats with indigenous yeasts, zero temperature control, and a level of craftsmanship that goes further than any other producer in the country. Here's the fact that should stop you in your tracks: Bodegas Muga is Spain's only winery with its own in-house cooperage — a master cooper and three barrel makers who hand-build every single barrel and vat used on the property, from oak the family personally selects in France each year. Every other winery in Spain buys their barrels. Muga builds theirs.

Torre Muga is the estate's modern masterpiece, first released in 1991 and built to bridge Rioja tradition with serious international ambition. The 2021 vintage draws from vineyards planted 55+ years old across Villalba de Rioja, Briñas, and Labastida — clay-limestone and alluvial soils at 480 to 560 meters that force these old vines to work for every drop of concentration. Tempranillo leads the blend, backed by Mazuelo and Graciano, hand-harvested in 200kg crates and fermented separately by variety before spending 16-18 months in new French oak — barrels made steps away from where the wine ages, by the same craftsmen who built them. This is the same estate behind Aro, Muga's legendary flagship red — so when I tell you Torre Muga carries that DNA, I mean it.

This isn't a one-hit wonder, either — Torre Muga has been landing on Wine Spectator's prestigious Top 100 Wines list for decades, a distinction reserved for the most compelling wines on the planet each year. The Muga name carries that same weight across its entire range, with repeated "Wine of the Year" and Top 100 recognition from the world's most influential critics, cementing Bodegas Muga as one of the true benchmark producers of Rioja.

And the 2021 vintage itself backs up the hype: near-perfect growing conditions across Rioja Alta produced wines with rare balance and true varietal expression, and Torre Muga 2021 is widely considered one of the standout releases of the vintage.

Tempranillo with Mazuelo and Graciano, all Rioja Alta. Deep, dense red in the glass with a young purple rim. The nose opens on ripe blackberry and strawberry, then the oak arrives: toast, coffee, chocolate, cedar, a smoky resinous edge. Dried herbs sit underneath — rosemary, thyme, pine. The palate is full-bodied and broad, black cherry and bramble and liquorice carried on a chalky, fine-grained tannin frame. Acidity is cool and fresh, which is what keeps the weight from tipping over. Long, persistent finish on ground coffee, graphite and dark chocolate. Decant it — an hour minimum.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"This is a stunning expression of Torre Muga, often described as the most 'modern' of the bodega's reds. Partnering Tempranillo, 15% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, it's an intense, layered, self-assured assemblage that handles its new French oak with ease. Think of it as Rioja meets Cru Classé Bordeaux, with appealing cedarwood, mocha and wild herb aromas, mouth-coating tannins, plenty of cool climate acidity and a core of black cherry, liquorice and bramble. One of the great 2021s. 2028-2045. (2026)" ~99 Tim Atkin, MW

"The 2021 Torre Muga is a big baby, still developing, remarkable in its wafty layers of 90% Tempranillo and complements of Mazuelo and Graciano. Gentle extraction is the key, the grapes coming from small plots of low-yielding older vines in Villalba de Rioja, Brinas, and Labastida. Smoky cinnamon and balsamic provide a sultry character to the berry fruit before going into new Allier oak barrels for 18 months. It has concentrated volume and full-bodied power, a gorgeous wine from a gorgeous vintage that's worth the price. Structured to develop further another 20-25 years, it should hit its prime in about five." ~98 Jeb Dunnuck

"In classic Torre Muga style, this is structured but polished with a fine, woodsy smokiness that delivers depth to the nose. There's a minty edge to the excellent layers of rich but fresh blackberries with dried herbs, pine cones, rosemary and lard. Well-integrated, caressing tannins are almost powdery. Really long. Drink from 2026." ~97 James Suckling

"Fragrant and enticing, this fresh red shows a statuesque quality while maintaining overall harmony and balance. Hints of violet, dried thyme and rosemary, graphite, and anise lace a dark core of juicy blackberry paste, black cherry coulis and olive tapenade flavors, all enmeshed with a fine frame of muscular tannins. A push of ground coffee, smoke and dark chocolate echoes on the finish. Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano. Drink now through 2046. (5/27/26)" ~96 Wine Spectator

"From vineyards around Villalba and Haro, the 2021 Torre blends Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano. Pronounced oak tones—coconut, caramel and cedar—frame the nose, alongside dark fruit. On the palate it is broad and creamy, with plush fruit, a gentle chalky texture and sweet, polished tannins that give the wine an international feel. First tasted in 2025, it seemed slightly disjointed, but it has since gained better integration in bottle." ~96 Vinous Media
