About The Wine

Some years, Napa just decides to show off. 2021 is that year. A brutal drought starved the vines, forcing them to produce tiny, thick-skinned berries with a concentration that's borderline obsessive. Production slashed by nearly 50%. This isn't just a release — it's a vanishing act.

Cakebread Cellars has been the steady hand in Napa for five decades — the kind of name that doesn't need to shout. But 2021 brought something different. Winemaker Niki Williams — who cut her teeth at The Prisoner and Mount Veeder — channeled that pedigree into this Benchland Select Reserve. It's the ultimate Napa flex: the reliability of a 50-year icon injected with a shot of modern adrenaline. Think of it as a blue-chip classic that just traded its suit for a leather jacket.

This Cabernet hits with the structural violence of the legendary 2013s but carries an inner sweetness and energy that's pure 2021 magic. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Ripe blackberry and boysenberry meet dark chocolate and toasty oak. Rich, smooth, balanced by fresh acidity and lush tannins, with a lingering finish and a hint of minerality.

93 Wine Spectator. This is the most cult bottle to come out of the estate in years. The kind of wine that makes you rethink what Cakebread can do.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

All Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select comes from both Rutherford and Oakville fruit and spent 22 months in 56% new French oak. This brings another level of precision and focus compared to the Suscol Springs, and the wine has a stunning array of black raspberries, spicy oak, lead pencil shavings, and exotic baking spice and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and elegant, it has ultra-fine tannins, perfectly integrated background oak, and a great finish. It has plenty of structure and will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and should still be going strong at age 20. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

A fresh, dark- and blue-fruited character with violets, walnuts, cedar and crushed stone on the nose. Full-bodied, intense and juicy with vivid acidity and chalky tannins. Lengthy and broad with tension and persistence. Drink after 2026. ~93 James Suckling

Cakebread's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select blends five clones from two different vineyards to yield bold scents of black cherries, cassis and mocha but also some redder berries. It's medium to full-bodied, edging just past 14% alcohol while still seeming generous and silky in feel, finishing long and harmonious, with a dusting of fine-grained tannins.~93 Wine Advocate

Ripe and polished, with juicy underlying energy to the mix of black currant and blackberry fruit flavors. Light hints of violet, apple wood and warm earth peek through as this red's solid grip holds the finish. Best from 2025 through 2036. 1,400 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Cakebread Cellars

Cakebread Cellars is a family-owned winery in Rutherford, Napa Valley, founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread. Today, the family farms more than 584 acres of vineyards across Napa Valley and Anderson Valley, cultivating a patchwork of soils, microclimates, and grape varieties. The winery is best known for its Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which are distributed internationally, and it produces around 200,000 cases a year. It started with a single parcel of Sauvignon Blanc and quickly became a benchmark for approachable yet serious California wine, anchored by a Chardonnay that balances richness and freshness. Cakebread is also Napa Green certified, with more than four decades of focus on quality, consistency, and continuity—both in the vineyards and in the team behind them.
