About The Wine

The first tower of Castello di Bossi rose in 1099, a medieval fortress that watched over the southern hills of Chianti Classico for nearly a millennium. Florentine troops destroyed it in 1478; it passed through the hands of the Ricasoli and Ugurgieri families before being reimagined as a fortified villa during the Grand Ducal era. In 1984, the Bacci family acquired the estate and has quietly built it into one of the appellation's most respected addresses.

The Berardo Riserva is the estate's top expression of Sangiovese, sourced from the historic vineyards in Castelnuovo Berardenga — the quieter, more structured corner of Chianti Classico. This is Sangiovese built for the cellar, not the shelf, released only after extended aging and reserved for fruit from the estate's best parcels.

The 2021 vintage exhibited great depth of fruit, balancing acidity and alcohol with confident rather than arrogant tannins. Spring frost was followed by a hot, dry summer, with cooler temperatures in September that encouraged slow ripening. Early September mornings dropped as low as 3°C while days reached 28-30°C — the kind of diurnal swing that favors acidity, perfume, and polyphenolic complexity. The 2021 Riservas are amply structured and textural, with firm but ripe tannins backed up by dense fruit.

In the glass: broad and fleshy weight, rich black cherry and plum aromas integrated with cedar, sweet cooking spices, chocolate, and saddle leather. Dense and structured on the palate with the weight to cellar. This is Chianti Classico with the depth and spine to evolve over the next decade, showing what Sangiovese does when it's given time and terroir worth the wait.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"Subtle aromas of black cherries, tar, mushrooms, black truffles and dark earth. Medium- to full-bodied with refined and linear tannins that give tension and focus to the wine. Delicate finish. From organically grown grapes. Lovely now. Drink or hold." ~94 James Suckling

"The organic Castello di Bossi 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo is 100% Sangiovese aged in botte for two years, followed by one year in bottle. Fruit comes from a site at 300 meters in elevation characterized by dark clay soils. These conditions add extra richness that comes forth as spice and cinnamon over dried cassis, blackberry and dried herb. This is a release of 60,000 bottles." ~92 Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Castello di Bossi

The earliest architectural evidence of the estate dates back to 1099, when the original medieval tower was built. In 1478, it was destroyed by Florentine troops. The castle passed into the hands of the Ricasoli family, then the Ugurgieri family. The current appearance of the castle dates back to the Grand Ducal era, when it was redesigned with a square layout as a fortified villa. In 1984, Castello di Bossi was acquired by the family of Marco Bacci, who still owns it today. The first tower of the castle dates back to 1099. In 1450 the structure took the form of a quadrilateral fortification. The estate is located in the south of Chianti Classico, in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Today the estate extends over 500 hectares, of which 120 are cultivated with vineyards, with an average altitude of 350 meters above sea level.
