About The Wine

Paul Hobbs launched Crossbarn in 2000 to honor his family's farming heritage — a tribute to the cross barn that served as a meeting place on his family's 150-year-old fruit farm in upstate New York. What began as a single lot of Cabernet has grown into a portfolio built on sustainable farming and meticulous vineyard selection, all rooted in the values of hard work and integrity that defined Hobbs' childhood.

This Napa Valley Cabernet is drawn from hand-harvested fruit across carefully curated vineyards, each site fermented separately to preserve its distinct micro-terroir. The 2021 vintage delivered textbook conditions: a cool, dry spring gave way to moderate summer warmth, then a cool August that slowed ripening and brought the fruit into optimal phenological balance. Harvest came in with less than 5% deviation from target — the kind of precision winemakers dream about.

The result is a wine that shows vibrant natural acidity alongside ripe, supple tannins. Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with crushed violets, red currant, and black plum, then unfolds into concentrated black fruits laced with dried herbs and cacao. A 5-day cold soak and 24-day maceration — native and select fermentations, minimal new oak — preserved the fruit's purity while building structure. James Suckling awarded it 95 points, calling out its sleek, polished balance and the cool-climate Coombsville fruit that anchors the blend.

Full-bodied but graceful, with fine-grained tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink it tonight or cellar it — the 2021 vintage built wines with both immediate appeal and serious staying power.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A juicy and flavorful red with real Napa character from vineyards in Calistoga and Coombsville. Medium-bodied with juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. Currant and hints of mint. But reserved and focused. Shows tension. Drink or hold. 94 James Suckling

An alluring red, with a menthol note out front, followed by a slow-moving core of boysenberry and blackberry reduction flavors. Shows ample anise and bramble through the grippy, toasty finish, where the menthol note takes an encore. Best from 2025 through 2035. ~93 Wine Spectator

Blended from Coombsville and Calistoga fruit, Crossbarn's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is a terrific bargain, made by Paul Hobbs. It's purple-fruited, with scents of cassis, blackberries and blueberries framed by hints of vanilla and cedar on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with a long, softy dusty finish. With just 8% new French oak—the bulk of the barrels are second and third use—the quality of the fruit really shines through. ~92 Wine Advocate

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is stellar, and also a fine value. A blast of blackberry, spice, lavender, mint, chocolate and dried herbs races across the palate. This deep, ample Cabernet Sauvignon from Paul Hobbs hits all the right notes. Today, it is supremely delicious.  ~91 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Crossbarn

Crossbarn was established in 2000 by Paul Hobbs to honor his family's farming heritage and values of sustainable farming. The winery is located in a former apple processing facility in Sebastopol, California. What began as one small lot of cabernet sauvignon from the inaugural vintage gradually evolved to introduce chardonnay and pinot noir. The 'cross' barn served as a childhood meeting place on the family's more than one hundred-and-fifty-year-old fruit farm situated in Niagara County, New York. Crossbarn honors the values of hard work and integrity instilled in Paul Hobbs from his childhood. The initial rubblestone winery building dates back to 1869. A barn was added to the complex around the turn of the century (1904). The barn measures 31 feet by 88 feet and is founded on basalt stone foundations.
