About The Wine

Damilano is one of the oldest Barolo houses in Piedmont — founded in the 1800s, still family-owned, now led by Giacomo Damilano's grandchildren. Over 130 years of winemaking, rooted in the Langhe Hills, treating the land with the kind of respect that shows up in the glass.

Cannubi is the Grand Cru of Barolo. The vineyard that matters. Clay-rich marl with up to 45% sand content — a geological quirk that gives Nebbiolo its extraordinary elegance and power in equal measure. This is the site every serious Barolo collector knows by name.

The 2021 vintage delivers exactly what Cannubi promises: well-defined raspberry, cherry, menthol, iron, and tar on the nose, with licorice, red currant, mint, and balsamic threading through. Medium- to full-bodied, ripe elegant tannins, chewy acidity, and a long precise finish. The kind of structure that rewards patience but doesn't punish curiosity.

Drinkable now if you give it an hour in the decanter. Best from 2027 onward, when the complexity really opens. You're buying a wine that'll still be hitting its stride a decade from now.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A very restrained, remarkably elegant wine showing licorice, red currant, mint and balsamic notes on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, it shows ripe, elegant tannins, chewy acidity and youthful style in the long, precise finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2027 for more complexity. ~96 James Suckling

Well-defined raspberry, cherry, menthol, iron, tar and woodsy aromas and flavors mark this intense, linear red. Juicy fruit and dense tannins square off, both heightened by the vibrant acidity. Shows fine balance, but just needs time. Best from 2029 through 2047.~95 Wine Spectator

The Damilano 2021 Barolo Cannubi represents a big production for this diminutive MGA site, with 35,000 bottles created. Aged in large oak casks, I found this wine to be closed on first nose (maybe reduced), with difficultly showing its aromas. There are budding notes of blackcurrant and iris, but it's hard to read this wine in its current state. It will require more time in bottle, and I hope to try it later to see if it opens.~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
