A name that now needs little introduction, Gaia has risen to become one of the most successful Greek wineries in the space of 30 years. Founded in Koutsi village in 1997 by agronomists Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos, the Nemea estate (they have one on Santorini too) is committed to Aghiorghitiko. This is the selection of the very best fruit from a steep 40-year-old vineyard at 550m, aged for at least 12 months in top-grade new French oak. In the glass, this is as vivid as an Argentinian Malbec, as polished as modern cru classé Bordeaux but with a certain freshness and tang that’s distinctively Aghiorghitiko. Velvety, lush and packed with aromas of Swiss chocolate, blackberry, violet and toast, it’s a modern marvel that shows just how good Aghiorghitiko can be. ~93 Decanter
A fresh, focused red, integrating refined, sculpted tannins with a plummy mix of ripe red and black currant and ripe damson plum, plus warm cinnamon and anise accents. Offering dried thyme, olive and mineral notes, this is lightly chewy and fragrant through the finish. Drink now through 2031. 2,915 cases made, 100 cases imported. ~91 Wine Spectator
