About the Wine

Etna DOC is located between Catania and Messina on the eastern coast of Sicily, very close to an active volcano named Mount Etna, a World UNESCO Heritage site. The terroir is out of this world, it features an incredible combination of fine ash, hardened lava, and sand. This results in extremely unique wines, which are the most genuine interpretation of Sicilian culture. If you want to learn more about this wonderful wine region, click here.

James Suckling once said, Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir are among the most delicate grapes in the world, producing world-class wines with power and finesse. If you have ever thought about an alternative that shows the beauty of both these grapes, Etna Rosso wines should be top of your list.” We agree Etna DOC is a hidden gem and a paradise for adventurous wine lovers.

This exquisite red wine captures the very essence of Sicily’s volcanic terroir.

Since 1906, Giovanni Rosso has been synonymous with the finest wines of Piedmont. Under the meticulous care of the Rosso family, each vineyard has been nurtured to produce wines that are highly distinguishable, terroir by terroir.

In 2016, Giovanni Rosso expanded their horizons to Sicily, acquiring the Etna estate in the picturesque hamlet of Solicchiata, Castiglione di Sicilia. This bold move has resulted in a wine that is as captivating as the volcanic landscape it hails from. The 2020 Etna Rosso Sicilia embodies the spirit of Etna, with a penetrating, bloody red color and a bouquet that bursts with the zest of orange or kumquat, firm berries, and a medley of spices.

Davide Rosso, (son of Giovanni Rosso) is a winemaker with international experience, has been at the helm of the winery since 2001. With a background that spans from the prestigious vineyards of Burgundy to the historic estates of Bordeaux, Davide brings a contemporary perspective to the age-old traditions of winemaking. His innovative approach and respect for the seasons have redefined the vineyards, ensuring that each bottle of Giovanni Rosso wine is a masterpiece of strength, structure, and elegance.

Tasting Notes

Perfumes: fine and deep in the aromas, introduced by Mediterranean citrusy sensations, followed by violet, bergamot, wet stones, forest leaves and elegant hints of white pepper. Taste: juicy; progressive delicate tannins and vibrant acidity. Neat and savoury finish.

Reviews

The 2021 Etna Rosso is darkly floral. Crushed violets combine with rose petals, lavender and citrus-spiked blackberries. It’s silky smooth, round and supple, with juicy acidity and masses of ripe red and blue fruits that swirl throughout. This tapers off on a note of refinement, gently tannic and long as black cherry and ground clove nuances resonate. While already a pleasure to enjoy today, the 2021 possesses the balance to excel through cellaring. ~93 Vinous Media

Light cherry red, almost translucent but for the vibrant reflections and the medium intensity core, opens with a sweet shot of red cherry on the first nose. The tannins are rustic in the most charmingly unfussy way, with the red fruits set against delicious cut orange peel edges. So easy to sink into, just love these wines. Andrea Delpiano winemaker, vineyards at 730-750m altitude. ~93 Jane Anson

Davide Rosso is one of a small number of Piedmontese winemakers who have found an affinity with Etna. Since 2016, he has produced wine from a 14ha vineyard at 750 metres above sea level on the volcano's north slope, in the Contrada of Solicchiata in Castiglione di Sicilia. 2021 saw a very dry growing season, and here you can find the higher concentration you might expect from such a year. Slightly plummy and very floral, it combines dark berries and bright raspberry with zesty acidity, touches of earthiness and spice, and a citrus peel finish. Lovely precision and freshness. ~92 Decanter
