I get notes of peat moss, ripe blueberry, dried currant, bacon fat and hints of cured tobacco. The tannins are gritty and open-grained and the freshness is mild to moderate. Tenuta di Sesta
Tenuta di Sesta isn't a modern Montalcino success story — it's a founding one. The Ciacci family has farmed these south-facing slopes near the Abbey of Sant'Antimo since 1850, and when Brunello di Montalcino earned its official recognition in 1966, Giuseppe Ciacci bottled one of the first twelve Brunellos in the entire appellation. That's not marketing copy; that's the historical record. Since 1995, Giuseppe's son Giovanni has run the estate alongside his children Andrea and Francesca, growing it from 10 to 30 hectares while keeping the winemaking rooted in large Slavonian oak and letting the terroir do the talking. The Brunello and Duelecci Riserva regularly pull 94 to 98 points from James Suckling, Wine Advocate and Vinous — the 2013 Riserva earned Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso and 96 from Suckling — which tells you exactly what kind of house this is before you ever open a bottle.
