About The Wine

La Crema is the estate that bet on Pinot Noir when almost no one in California was bothering. Founded in 1979 as La Crema Vinera — the best of the vine — the winery built its reputation on cool-climate, handcrafted Pinot and Chardonnay long before Sonoma became synonymous with either. When Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke acquired it in 1993, they doubled down: $12 million into the Russian River Valley facility, pioneering single-vineyard designates, and growing the label into one of the fifty largest wineries in the country without losing the thread. That thread is place.

Sonoma County Pinot Noir lives in the tension between Pacific fog and warm inland days. The 2021 Sealift pulls from sites shaped by cool maritime influence — the same fog-laced mornings and ocean breezes that give Russian River fruit its depth and lift. Ancient seashells turn up in the Sealift Vineyard soils, one ridge in from the rugged Sonoma Coast, a geological reminder that this was ocean floor before it was vineyard. That mineral backbone runs through the wine.

The glass delivers layers: blackberry, orange zest, exotic spice on the nose; ripe black plum, wild berry, and licorice on the palate. Supple tannins, vibrant acidity, 14.7% ABV that carries weight without heat. Wine Spectator handed it 93 points and called it "flush with mulberry and boysenberry pate de fruit, backed by melted licorice and sweet spice." The kind of Pinot that makes you remember why California started planting it in the first place.

This is Russian River pedigree in a six-pack format. Pull the cork tonight or let it sit another two years — the structure's there either way.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Flush with mulberry and boysenberry pate de fruit notes, this red is backed by melted licorice and sweet spice accents on the caressing, flattering finish, which is sneakily long thanks to the well-buried acidity. For the fruit-loving crowd. Drink now through 2033. 1,353 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator

The 2021 Pinot Noir Sealift Vineyard sports a darker ruby/purple hue as well as aromas of black cherry liqueur, mocha, and pressed purple flowers. Full-bodied and generous with immediate fruit up front and a good lift of fresh acidity on the finish, it’s lush with pine and black and red fruit, with its rosy floral perfume lasting on the finish. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck

The nose of this wine is a balance between darker cherry and cranberry aromas, with black tea, cinnamon and sage emerging as the glass swirls. On the palate, fresh floral flavors come to the front along with brighter cranberry and savory mushroom. There’s some grippy tannins here, with balancing acidity. A few years in the cellar might round things out nicely. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
